Hillcrest Pride Flag to fly high after ceremony Friday night

SAN DIEGO – After months of planning, fundraising and hard work, a rainbow flag will finally fly permanently over Hillcrest.

Friday at 6:30 pm, the Hillcrest Pride Flag will be raised for the first time during a special ceremony that will kick off “America’s Pride” weekend in San Diego. Community members who attend San Diego Pride’s annual Spirit of Stonewall Rally, which will be held on Harvey Milk and Normal streets in Hillcrest, will be able to witness the flag’s first official raising at the end of the program.

Final work begins today on Hillcrest Pride Flag project

SAN DIEGO – Workers today began drilling a big hole for the flagpole that will fly the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

The flagpole will be located on the median at Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue in the heart of Hillcrest.

Organizers told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News today that the flag will be flying in time for San Diego Pride’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally on Friday, July 20.

Hillcrest Pride Flag on track for installation by July

SAN DIEGO -- The first step in the installation of the Hillcrest Pride Flag began today.

Workers from the Southern California Soil & Testing, Inc. performed core testing this morning to prepare a geotechnical report in advance of construction.

Urban Mo's bartender to represent San Diego in Palm Springs Cocktail Challenge

SAN DIEGO -- Urban Mo’s bartender Michael “Giggles” Calles will represent San Diego at the third annual Palm Springs Summer Splash Cocktail Challenge, taking place Thursday.

Calles, the first runner-up in a local competition earlier this month, will compete against bartenders from 11 cities with his “Blue Palm” cocktail, made from Stoli Blueberi, Blue Curacao, Triple Sec, Sweet & Sour, and lemon/line soda with a blueberry, cherry and orange garnish.

BREAKING NEWS: Rainbow flag will fly high in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- Very soon, San Diego's LGBT community will see a colorful symbol of their pride flying high above the Hillcrest neighborhood.

Today, the City Council voted 7-0 to approve a proposal by the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) to install a 65-foot flagpole in the median on Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue.

City Councilmember Lorie Zapf was absent from the vote.

The plan calls for the pole to fly an 18 foot x 12 foot rainbow pride flag year-round, and include some minor enhancements to the median, around the base of the flagpole.

SAN DIEGO -- The fate of the proposed Hillcrest Pride Flag project will be decided upon by the San Diego City Council at its 2:30 pm meeting on Tuesday, May 15.

Community members are being encouraged by project organizers to express their support of the proposal to the council via email, by attending the meeting, or both.

BREAKING NEWS: Planning commission rejects Hillcrest Pride Flag project, but City Council to make final decision

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego’s Planning Commission today voted 4-2 to not recommend the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) application to install a 65-foot Pride flagpole at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue, but the project could still obtain the approval of the City Council.

The proposal calls for a rainbow flag to fly year-round on the flagpole, which is in the heart of the gayborhood and near The Center.
