Taste of Hillcrest to feature local microbreweries

SAN DIEGO -- More than 50 restaurants, breweries and retailers will be a part of a self-guided culinary adventure in Hillcrest on April 20, when the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) hosts the 13th annual Taste of Hillcrest. The four-hour event runs from noon to 4 pm and boasts cuisine from more than 40 restaurants, including Crest Cafe, Baja Betty’s, Nami Sushi and Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill.

HBA Beautification Committee seeks public input

Hillcrest Business Association Executive Director Benjamin Nicholls and the organization’s Beautification Committee are organizing a community walkabout, in part to gain feedback from residents and business owners on potential projects for the committee.

The walkabout will take place Thursday, April 18 at 5 pm.

Salt & Cleaver to open in Hillcrest soon

A new Hillcrest restaurant that underscores many of the world’s favorite sausages is slated to open the week of April 15 in a dramatically redesigned space that formerly housed St. Tropez Bistro and, more recently, Cote Sud.

Stocked with a full bar featuring 20 beer taps, Salt & Cleaver is marked by an illuminated 600-pound wrought iron wall on its front patio along with backlit signage set against knotted timber.

TONIGHT: Hillcrest Town Council meeting to feature Todd Gloria

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Town Council has a full agenda planned for its meeting tonight, including a presentation by San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria.

Community members and others gathered at the meeting will hear a presentation from Gloria on community issues, and will also be given the opportunity to ask questions of him. Gloria is currently in his second term on the City Council and has represented the area for five years.

Representatives from other local government offices will also be present and available to hear feedback and take questions from the audience.

VIDEO: String of armed robberies occur within one hour in City Heights, Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police are investigating a string of armed robberies Monday targeting pedestrians.

The first two happened in City Heights around 11 pm Sunday. One was reported on El Cajon Boulevard, while the other happened at 37th Street and Polk Avenue.

The third robbery happened on the sidewalk near Rich's Nightclub in Hillcrest. The fourth robbery was at 1st and Robinson Avenue, also in Hillcrest.

Whole Foods Market Hillcrest to celebrate remodel

SAN DIEGO -- Whole Foods Market recently completed a remodel of their Hillcrest location, and employees are getting set for a grand celebration. In the business’s 16 years in Uptown, this is by far the largest – and most extensive – remodel.

Marketing Supervisor Ray Kau said the remodel was a big change for the store, and designers strived to keep the integrity of the neighborhood in tact through several elements. Around the inside perimeter, images and artistic renderings of several iconic Uptown images and streets were incorporated.

Request for Quote: HBA seeks online business directory developer

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) has released a Request for Quotes (RFQ) for an online member directory project it will take on this spring. HBA plans to post the directory with information about each of its member businesses so that consumers have an easy way to find shopping, dining, and other services in the neighborhood.

Through the RFQ, HBA is looking for proposals to create the online directory database, with a number of requirements as listed in the request. Those interested in submitting a quote should do by 5 pm on April 30.
