301 University project in Hillcrest deemed "not historic"

SAN DIEGO -- Construction work on the new Walgreens store planned for 301 University Ave. in Hillcrest will soon resume, as city planners have deemed the property "not historic."

According to HillQuest.com, San Diego's senior Historic Planner, Kelley Stanco, has advised community members that the city has determined that too many of the original features of the building have been altered for anything to be saved, so demolition will continue.

VIDEO: This weekend, 28th annual Hillcrest CityFest expands with "CityFest Night"

SAN DIEGO – Hillcrest’s annual community celebration, CityFest, will return for the 28th year this Sunday starting at noon.

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest History Guild, along with Whole Foods Market and HillQuest.com, will present the sixth "Summer Movie on the Roof" on Wednesday evening.

This annual event typically draws crowds more than 200 people to the roof atop Whole Foods Market for an evening of fun, community spirit, food and film.

Event organizers have selected the 1996 hit "Big Night" as this year's film, the story of a failing Italian restaurant run by two brothers who gamble on one special night to try to save the business.

SDGLN launches partnership with HuffPost Gay Voices

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Gay & Lesbian News (SDGLN) and HuffPost Gay Voices have agreed to be media partners, and the two LGBT news organizations will share content on the two daily websites that have global readership.

SDGLN Editor in Chief Ken Williams said that the partnership will benefit readers of both websites.

Uptown parking board seeks members from Bankers Hill/Park West neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO -- To round out the recently reorganized Uptown Parking Advisory Board, residents and business owners from the Bankers Hill/Park West neighborhoods are being sought for seats on the board, which makes recommendations for parking improvements in the Uptown area.

Candidates who are interested in vying for one of the five seats are invited to introduce themselves at a meeting of the Bankers Hill Residents Group on Monday, Jan. 16, at 6:30 pm.

Hillcrest Town Council to discuss community issues at Tuesday meeting

SAN DIEGO -- Hillcrest residents who are looking to get involved with their community this year are encouraged to attend the next meeting of the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC), to be held Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 pm.

Numerous community issues will be discussed at the open meeting, including a presentation from the Hillcrest History Guild on the fate of the historic Jones House at 4040 Fifth Ave. near Mercy Hospital.

Hillcrest History Guild invites neighbors to fifth annual holiday potluck on Dec. 13

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest History Guild (HHG) is inviting neighbors to celebrate the holiday season at its fifth annual holiday potluck on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 pm.

The event will be held in lieu of the regularly scheduled Hillcrest Town Council meeting and be an opportunity for Hillcrest residents to come together, meet each other, play games and celebrate.

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) is inviting all residents of the neighborhood to its July meeting, which will be held tonight from 6:30 to 8 pm.

The meeting will include a number of topics, including a presentation by Chris Chaffee on the San Diego Historic Streetcar project. Chaffee's group is working to restore and return the historic Class-1 streetcars to San Diego.
