SAN DIEGO – Growing up, Murry never knew of a life without alcohol, drugs and crime. In fact, he started using alcohol and drugs on the streets of San Diego at the age of 9.

Murry, who will only be referred to by his first name in this article because of the principles of his recovery program and to protect his privacy, is now 32 and says that he is just now finally starting to really live his life.

Imperial Court de San Diego to celebrate 40 years

SAN DIEGO -- Assemblymember Toni Atkins and San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria will join the Imperial Court de San Diego for its 40th anniversary celebrations, taking place Friday, Feb. 10, through Sunday, Feb. 12.

Over the weekend, reigning emperor of the San Diego court Allan Spyere will be joined by Empress Erika Odessa to crown the organization's 40th set of monarchs.

The weekend will also serve as a celebration of the court's 39th reign, which is coming to a close.

San Ysidro Health Center wins AIDS Walk & Run fundraising competition grant

SAN DIEGO – To increase contributions to last year's AIDS Walk & Run San Diego, a number of organizations that provide services to people living with HIV/AIDS participated in a special team fundraising competition.

The San Ysidro Health Center is the recipient of this first-ever competition, called the AIDS Walk $10,000 Team Fundraising Competition grant.

COMMENTARY: Reinstatement of ban on federal funding for syringe exchange is shameful

AIDS United is outraged and disappointed at Congress' reinstatement of the ban on federal funding for syringe exchange programs, which was lifted in 2009. The ban is included in the Labor Health and Human Services appropriations bill included in the final FY 2012 appropriations package.

The event, which is being organized by staff of the salon, will include a fashion show, food reception, and a special performance by FLAVA.

Speaking as the 4 Friends, a collaboration of San Diego’s AIDS Service Organizations, after 30 years of fighting this fight, we should have something to say.

Dentists in LA County practice high rate of discrimination towards HIV/AIDS patients, study shows

LOS ANGELES –– A new study released today by the Williams Institute found that five percent of dental offices in Los Angeles County have a blanket policy of refusing dental services to People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

The study also found that an additional 5% of dental providers would treat PLWHA differently than other patients in ways that could potentially violate anti-discrimination laws. Examples of such different treatment include only providing the most basic of services to PLWHA, such as a cleaning, or only treating them on certain days of the week or in an isolated room.

Holiday tree sale to benefit Mama's Kitchen in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- As Christmas trees start to pop up in homes immediately following Thanksgiving, Mama's Kitchen has created an opportunity for people to support the organization when purchasing a holiday tree this year.

Mama's Kitchen's Holiday Tree Sale will allow community members to order and pay for their tree online and then head to a tree lot to select and pick-up a tree.

Customers have the option of selecting Noble Firs ranging in size from four to nine feet; Douglas Firs ranging from 5 to 9 feet; 24-inch mixed wreaths; and 6-inch poinsettias.

ACTION ALERT: Pies still available through Mama's Pie in the Sky fundraiser

SAN DIEGO -- Mama's Kitchen's popular annual fundraiser, Mama's Pie in the Sky, is entering its "crunch time" as volunteers prepare for the pie distribution, which will take place later this month.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, volunteers will come together to assemble, fold and label thousands of boxes that will hold the purchased pies. The boxes will then be delivered to local bakers who are donating their time to bake the pies that are sold by hundreds of volunteers to benefit Mama's Kitchen.
