Thousands violently protest in Georgia over gay rights rally

TBILISI, Georgia -- Thousands of Georgians have protested in the capital Tbilisi against a gay rights rally being held to mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

They broke through police barricades and carried stinging nettles with which to beat activists. Some posters read: "We don't need Sodom and Gomorrah".

Police were forced to bus the 50 or so activists out of the city center to avoid further violence.

Several people, including a journalist and a police officer, were injured.

EU LGBT survey: Poll on homophobia sparks concern

A quarter of gay people surveyed in a major EU poll say they have been subjected to attacks or violent threats in the past five years.

Poorer and younger respondents were more likely to face discrimination due to their sexuality, the survey found.

Some 93,000 people in the EU and Croatia were polled in the EU's first survey on this scale.

Gay rights campaigners welcomed the report but called for stronger legal action by Brussels to tackle the issue.

COMMENTARY: Tom Joyner's homophobic message to the Black community

On May 1, Jason Collins, the 7-foot center for the Washington Wizards and a former Boston Celtics, came out. His statement, “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay” made the cover story for the May 6 issue of Sports Illustrated.

On May 2, three Morehouse College basketball athletes were accused of raping an 18-year-old Spelman College student. The story didn't hit the airwaves as the Collins story did.

Many in the African-American community were silent on both incidents because they view both as poxes on the community.

(Editor’s note: The Rev. Canon Albert Ogle is en route to a UNAIDS meeting in Geneva where the difficulties of proving prevention and health services to men who have sex with men (MSM) will be the focus of the two-day consultation. Given that he criminalization of homosexuality in 76 countries makes it so much more difficult to reach and support these vulnerable populations, he describes how the work is being hampered in Zambia by religious zealots who have targeted one of the leading HIV activists there.)

COMMENTARY: Taking down anti-Keynesian economics homophobe Niall Ferguson

There are a lot of sound reasons to critique Keynesian economics, but a reason that its creator was gay shouldn't be one of them.

Niall Ferguson, the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University, has sadly, in 2013, just found that out.

Ferguson's speech to investors and financial analysts at the 10th annual Altegris Conference in Carlsbad, Calif. that should have awed his audience instead shocked and offended them.
