Lady Gaga applauds Russian PM, who disses "gay propaganda" bill

Lady Gaga today took to Twitter to thank Russia's prime minister for saying that the nation did not need to pass a bill that would prohibit "gay propaganda."

Although similar bills have been passed in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told the media this week that such a draconian law went too far:

"Not every moral issue, behavioral habit or communication issue between people should be regulated. This is why not all relationships between people are subject to a legal interpretation.

Football team sacked after homophobic threats

A Swedish football (soccer) club has fired all the players on its top team following complaints that players hurled homophobic remarks at members of an opposing team.

"We distance ourselves from all insults. Clearly it's damaging for the club to have players who don't follow the rules," Ketil Torp, chair of the Sörskogens IF football club, told Sveriges Radio (SR).

Parents say anti-gay bullying is to blame for son's suicide

FENTON, Mich. -- The parents of a Michigan high school student who took his own life last week believe anti-gay bullying is to blame.

Josh Pacheco, 17, committed suicide on Nov. 27. His mother, Lynnette Capehart, said that Josh was gay, which led to him being bullied both inside and outside of school, reported MLive.

In Uganda, Parliament tied up with controversial oil bill, but "Kill The Gays" bill is next

KAMPALA, Uganda – Parliament remains up to its ears in debate over a controversial oil bill, meaning that the MPs have not yet turned their attention to the “Kill The Gays” bill that is ranked as the next priority.

Activists and concerned citizens say they are hoping that the session will run out on Dec. 14 without a vote on the draconian “Kill The Gays” bill, formally known as the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

ACTION ALERT: Urge Nigerian president to ditch “Jail The Gays” bill

While the world is focused on Uganda’s “Kill The Gays” bill, the Nigerian House of Representatives has unanimously approved even more sweeping and draconian homophobic legislation, the “Jail the Gays” bill. It could become law within weeks.

The Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill, which now moves forward to the next parliamentary stage, criminalize same-sex marriages and civil unions, with penalties of up to 14 years jail for participants and 10 years jail for anyone who assists or witnesses such a marriage or union.

COMMENTARY: AP’s discouraging “homophobia” is so discouraging

The editors of the Associated Press Stylebook have announced that they are “discouraging” use of the word "homophobia." The AP Stylebook is the widely used guide that media use to standardize terms and general usage.

Why should the LGBTQ community be in a kerfuffle about it? Because the editors made their decision without consultation with the nation's leading LGBTQ organizations, leaders, activists and newspapers. That is a problem.

COMMENTARY: AP bans "homophobia," but SDGLN won't follow suit

The Associated Press (AP) has decided to ban the use of “phobia,” particularly the word “homophobia.”

Monday’s update to the AP Stylebook, considered the bible of copy editors across the English-speaking world, says that words ending in “phobia” indicate “an irrational, uncontrollable fear, often a form of mental illness” and should not be uses in “political or social contexts.”
