BREAKING NEWS: Chad Griffin of AFER to replace Joe Solmonese as HRC leader

WASHINGTON -- Chad Griffin, a founding board member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), today was named president of the Human Rights Campaign.

Griffin, one of the faces of AFER, the sole sponsor of the Proposition 8 lawsuit, will replace the outgoing Joe Solmonese on June 11. Solmonese will become involved in the re-election efforts for President Barack Obama.

White House hosts policy briefing for Black LGBT emerging leaders

WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has partnered with the Obama Administration, the National Black Justice Coalition and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in a White House policy briefing for black LGBT emerging leaders today.

“People of color face unique obstacles in the fight for LGBT equality,” HRC President Joe Solmonese said. “HRC is committed to working with LGBT leaders in the African-American community during Black History month and throughout the year in our fight for LGBT equality and social justice.”

Anti-gay hate group NOM sponsoring tonight's GOP debate

WASHINGTON – The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a leading anti-gay hate group that works to spread misinformation about LGBT Americans and halt the growing momentum surrounding marriage equality, is sponsoring tonight’s GOP presidential debate as part of this year’s Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC).

The Southern Poverty Law Center calls NOM “one of the most visible and active anti-gay marriage groups,” and says the organization propagates “known falsehoods” about LGBT people.

ABC cancels "Work It," which riled up transgender people

LOS ANGELES -- ABC said today that the series “Work It” has been cancelled after two episodes.

GLAAD and LGBT advocacy organizations including the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) had spoken out against the series for its potential to cause harm to transgender people.

The series debuted on Jan. 3 to low ratings, and, according to Entertainment Weekly, dropped another 205 this week.

Her HRC San Diego event to celebrate women in community

SAN DIEGO -- The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) will present a special evening for women, "Her HRC," on Sunday, Jan. 15.

The event will include acoustic live music, wine, and food at MoSaic Wine Bar in North Park.

Guests will have the opportunity to select from MoSaic's wide selection of wines from around the world, while enjoying food and drink specials and music.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about HRC at the event, and the purchase of a ticket includes an annual HRC membership.

Oklahoma lawmaker wants to ban gays and lesbians from state's National Guard

WASHINGTON -- The Human Rights Campaign is joining The Equality Network in condemning legislation Oklahoma state Rep. Mike Reynolds (R-Oklahoma City) is pushing that would implement a more extreme version of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law, which would be applicable to the state’s National Guard.

The bill would ban gay, lesbian and bisexual people from serving in the Oklahoma National Guard.

HRC to Weekly Standard: Don't fundraise for homophobic bigots!

WASHINGTON -- The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is condemning the Weekly Standard for sending an email on behalf of one of their sponsors, the anti-gay organization “Public Advocate of the United States,” that called LGBT Americans “sexual deviants," asking recipients to contribute financially to efforts aimed at defaming the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA).

Rep. Barney Frank’s unexpected decision to retire from the House of Representatives, coupled with Rep. Tammy Baldwin’s bid to win the Senate seat from Wisconsin, suddenly leaves the door wide open for the next generation of LGBT leaders in Congress.

Adoption forum to urge child welfare agencies to include gay families

WASHINGTON – Bryan Samuels, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Commissioner of the Administration for Children, Youth and Families, will be joining the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), LGBT families and representatives from area child welfare agencies for an adoption forum on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The forum will recognize the close of National Adoption Month and call on child welfare professionals to include LGBT families, year-round, in their efforts to expand the pool of families for foster youth.
