Adoption forum to urge child welfare agencies to include gay families

WASHINGTON – Bryan Samuels, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Commissioner of the Administration for Children, Youth and Families, will be joining the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), LGBT families and representatives from area child welfare agencies for an adoption forum on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The forum will recognize the close of National Adoption Month and call on child welfare professionals to include LGBT families, year-round, in their efforts to expand the pool of families for foster youth.

Opportunities for college students available through HRC

WASHINGTON -- The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has relaunched its LGBT student scholarship database, providing college students in the U.S. with hundreds of opportunities to apply for funding to support their education.

The database lists hundreds of opportunities sorted by those that are available nationwide, followed by state-specific and school-specific scholarships. Opportunities listed include scholarships, fellowships and grants for LGBT and allied students at both the undergraduate and graduate-level.

BREAKING NEWS: Panel votes to repeal DOMA, sends bill to full Senate

WASHINGTON -- The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-8 today to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, advancing the Respect for Marriage Act (S. 598) in the U.S. Senate.

The vote followed party lines with the 10 Democrats voting in favor of the repeal and the 8 Republicans voting to keep the status quo.

The law, signed in 1996 by President Bill Clinton, discriminates against legally married gay and lesbian couples.

LIVE: MTV Dance Party promoting inclusivity for LGBT youth

LOS ANGELES -- MTV's O Music Awards is trying to set the Guinness World Record for Longest Team Dance Marathon in a benefit for various LGBT groups.

You can watch it LIVE online from The Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip.

Organizers hope to set the record later today.

Throughout the livestream, a bunch of celebs are planning to stop by to show their support including Shangela ("RuPaul’s Drag Race"), Peta Meragatroyd ("Dancing With The Stars") and We R Heroes ("America’s Best Dance Crew"). The goal is to break the world record during the live show at the end of Monday's show.

VIDEO: HRC letter to NOM - Fess up about stolen photo

(Editor's note: The Human Rights Campaign sent this letter to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) calling out the group’s deceitful tactics in New Hampshire. NOM is using a photograph from an Obama campaign event in Ohio to mislead New Hampshire voters into believing they have more supporters than they actually do. VIDEO: HRC launches Americans for Marriage Equality education campaign

WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign today launched Americans for Marriage Equality, a public engagement campaign featuring prominent Americans who support committed gay and lesbian couples getting married.

The campaign will draw from a cadre of supportive professional athletes, film and music celebrities, political and civil rights leaders– and will have a special emphasis on Republicans, African-Americans, Latinos and elected officials. The campaign can be viewed HERE.

HRC to deliver petitions to N.J. school board calling for action against anti-gay teacher

WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign is presenting the Union Township School Board with signatures from the over 75,000 HRC members and supporters who have signed a petition calling for immediate action to be taken against teacher Viki Knox following her public outbursts against LGBT Americans.

HRC will deliver the signatures tonight at the Union Township School Board meeting, taking place at 7 pm at Union High School in New Jersey. School officials have said they are investigating Knox.

Senate panel to hold markup for bill to repeal DOMA

WASHINGTON – Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) said today that there would be a markup on the Respect for Marriage Act that would repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Leahy, who is chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, said the markup would occur next month.

The Respect for Marriage Act was introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) on March 16 of this year.

HRC to GOP candidates: Where do you stand on Herman Cain’s remarks on gay being a choice?

WASHINGTON – One day after GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain appeared on “The View” and declared that people choose to be gay, the Human Rights Campaign is asking Cain’s fellow candidates to clarify where they standon the issue.

“Issues of LGBT equality and discrimination have played a role in the GOP primaries to date – from Michele Bachmann’s anti-gay past and ties to reparative therapy, to audience members booing a brave gay active duty servicemember,” HRC President Joe Solmonese said.
