HUD awards $33 million to 18 HIV/AIDS housing programs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced that more than 1,200 extremely low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS will continue to receive permanent housing as a result of nearly $33 million in grants HUD is awarding.

Four California program earned grants: $1.5 million to the City of Los Angeles Housing Department, $1.5 million to the County of Alameda Housing and Community Development Department, $1.3 million to the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center in San Francisco, and $1 million to the Salvation Army Alegria in Long Beach.

In a powerful speech on Saturday, Jan. 28, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan made history when he unveiled HUD’s LGBT Equal Access policy—a new rule that will protect more than 5.5 million people across the country from discrimination in public housing and Federal Housing Administration (FHA)-insured mortgages.

BALTIMORE, Md. – A new federal rule being published this week will greatly increase protections against housing discrimination for the LGBT community.

Shaun Donovan, Secretary of the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), made the announcement Saturday during the 24th National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change, a conference hosted by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF).
