Ian Harvie serves up his trans life with laughter and a whole lotta love

SAN DIEGO -- Ian Harvie was a little nervous as he sat in the "green room" at Martinis Above Fourth last night, in advance of his headlining performance as part of the monthly Laugh Out Proud.

But according to the 43-year old trans man, nerves are good.

"If I didn't get nervous I'd think that something is wrong, like I wasn't in it anymore," he told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News. "[That feeling] makes you commit to your art.

SAN DIEGO -- Laugh Out Proud, San Diego's only comedy show geared toward the LGBT community, returns to Martinis Above Fourth on Thursday, May 10, with comedians Sarah Burford, Allison Gill, Sean Wherley, Jen McGlone and headliner Ian Harvie.

Produced by Wherley and Burford, Laugh Out Proud is designed to showcase the region’s top LGBT and allied comedians in a safe environment for the LGBT community.

VIDEO: Transgender funnyman Ian Harvie hopes to produce first-ever mainstream cable comedy special

PORTLAND, Maine -- Back in January 2002, Ian Harvie had never considered comedy as a career option.

Then one day, something very serendipitous happened … it was something so random, but so significant, it would change his life in many ways.

Harvie got a postcard in the mail from a man named Tim Ferrell, advertising a local comedy writing workshop. He's not sure how Ferrell got his name or address, but after kicking the idea around a little while, he decided to take the class.

"Tim Ferrell brought me to the dance," Harvie told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News.
