Sen. Leahy files immigration amendment to allow gays to sponsor foreign-born partners

WASHINGTON – The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday filed an amendment to a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would allow legally married gay Americans to sponsor their foreign-born partners for green cards.

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) filed the amendment to the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act, one of several the committee chairman filed on Tuesday.

President Obama says he supports including gays in immigration bill

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — President Barack Obama said Friday he supports recognizing gay unions in a broad immigration bill pending in Congress but won’t say whether he would sign legislation that fails to do so.

HRC: Congress MUST pass inclusive and comprehensive immigration reform

WASHINGTON – Press reports this week indicate that a small minority of senators are threatening to derail immigration reform if it includes a provision allowing an American citizen’s foreign-born same-sex spouse the ability to become a citizen, just as straight couples are now allowed to do.

Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said he was outraged by the exclusion threat.

Immigration bill excludes LGBT people

WASHINGTON – The Senate’s so-called Gang of Eight today introduced its new immigration bill, and LGBT binational couples are not mentioned.

LGBT groups and allies said they are hoping that the bill will be amended to include protections for binational couples who are gay and lesbian.
Of the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States, about 267,000 identify as LGBT. Of that total, about 40,000 are binational couples.

COMMENTARY: Republican Party stubbornly opposes same-sex marriage

The Republican National Committee has again aggressively affirmed its party’s permanent opposition to marriage equality. On Friday the RNC unanimously adopted a resolution declaring that mixed-gender marriage is holy, but same-gender marriage is un-holy. 100 percent of the Republican Congressional leadership – Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-California), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) – and 98 percent of all other Republicans in Congress – oppose marriage equality.

Immigration Court urged not to deport HIV-positive man convicted in sting

LOS ANGELES – Lambda Legal and the HIV Law Project today submitted a friend-of-the-court brief asking the Bureau of Immigration Appeals (BIA) to overturn an Immigration Judge’s ruling ordering the deportation of an HIV-positive immigrant convicted of solicitation for oral sex.

Gay detainee accuses immigration authorities of endangering his life

SAN DIEGO – A 26-year-old gay man is accusing two immigration guards in El Centro, Calif. of making anti-gay slurs at him, violently roughing him up while in custody, and putting in danger his health and his life.

He is pleading for immigration officials to give him a crucial medicine needed to prevent seizures and a special diet necessary to control his colitis.

Special fund helps LGBT “DREAMers” get work permits and relief from deportation

SAN FRANCISCO — Nearly 200 LGBT undocumented young people have either received or are in the process of receiving two-year work permits and reprieves from the threat of deportation, thanks to a fund made possible by over four dozen LGBT organizations.

Last summer, President Barack Obama created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to enable people who came to the United States as children — commonly known as “DREAMers” — to apply for work permits and relief from deportation.

Gay groups, allies glad LGBT families are included in plans for immigration reform | VIDEO

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Gay rights groups and their allies quickly praised President Barack Obama for including LGBT families in his proposal for overhauling the nation’s outdated immigration policy.

In a televised speech on Tuesday, the President declared immigration legislation was one of his Administration’s top domestic priorities and he urged Congress to take action.

“Now is the time,” Obama told an audience at a local high school where most of the students are of Hispanic origin. “Si, se puedo,” some students chanted back, indicating that they believed an overhaul is possible.
