LGBT2NETWORK to celebrate Long Beach Pride with pool party

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- LGB2NETWORK - a Southern California networking group for the LGBT community and allies - will celebrate Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Weekend with the return of the group’s popular Play@ Maya Pool party at Hotel Maya on Saturday, May 18 from noon to 6 pm.

In 2011, LGB2Network launched a much-anticipated summer pool party series, Play@ Maya, during Long Beach’s Pride weekend. The series was hosted at the completely renovated Hotel Maya in Downtown Long Beach’s south waterfront, which boasts picturesque views of the City.

Last week in Iowa City I realized the LGBT movement spends too much effort preaching to gay urban audiences. We need to invest more time gathering support from straight neighbors, especially in suburban and rural areas, so that LGBT acceptance becomes a full community affair.

Although I was cold from the rain during my few days in Iowa City, my heart was warm from seeing firsthand a local community energized to advance LGBT acceptance.

On anniversary of Billy Lucas’ suicide, family files wrongful death lawsuit

Two years ago today, on Sept. 9, 2010, Billy (William) Lucas, a 15-year-old from Greensburg, Ind., was was found dead in a barn at his grandmother’s home. He had hanged himself.

While Billy never self-identified as gay, friends said he was tormented for years because other kids thought he was gay.

Billy took his own life just hours after fellow students told him he didn’t deserve to live.

VIDEOS: "It Gets Better" touring show to blend music, theater, multimedia

LOS ANGELES – The Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and the It Gets Better Project today announced a partnership in collaboration with Speak Theater Arts to develop an original national touring show.

“It Gets Better” will blend music, theater and multimedia into a live stage production that promotes hope and an anti-bullying dialogue. It will bring the timely, powerful message of the It Gets Better Project to communities across the country.

VIDEO: Brigham Young students reach out to young, gay Mormons: “It Gets Better”

PROVO, Utah -- LGBT students and straight allies at Utah’s Brigham Young University on Friday released an “It Gets Better” video, adding their voice to the tens of thousands of video messages aimed at preventing depression and suicide among gay youth.

The video includes several LGBT students discussing the conflict they felt about being gay and Mormon, and how they considered suicide because they couldn’t reconcile their sexual orientation with their faith.

San Diego national educator conference on LGBTQIA students has "changed lives forever"

SAN DIEGO -- The third annual national educator conference, "Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives," held this last weekend has now come and gone, but the seeds that were planted are already beginning to sprout and take shape back at the school districts and individual campuses around the country.

Aimed at empowering K-12 school counselors and educators of LGBTQIA students to make school campuses a safer, more welcoming environment, the sold out conference did just that.

It Gets Better Project special to air tonight on MTV and Logo networks

The "It Gets Better Project" is coming to a television near you, tonight, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 8 pm (PST).

Dan Savage started the "It Gets Better Project" in September of 2010, after a rash of LGBT teen suicides due to bullying began to rock the nation.

He and his partner, Terry Miller, created a single video that quickly grew to over 40,000 videos. The videos have been uploaded from all over the world, and have received over 50 million views overall.

SAN DIEGO -- A conference that strives to "make it better" for our nation's youth returns to San Diego for the third year in a row, beginning Friday, February 17 through Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at the Doubletree Hotel in Mission Valley.
