In The Raw: Exposure to violence as a child impacts adult relationships | VIDEO

Some people can remember hiding away when the parents would “go at it” or the fear of the “bad things” when dad was drunk. Unfortunately some people have experienced never being taken care of as a child, not protected, alone trying to cope as a little kid.

The unpredictable and scary environment has a long-term impact on how we respond to others, especially in intimate relationships. As children, our brains are like sponges: We watch, learn and then replicate.

In the Raw: How to cope with loneliness

"I’m really struggling with feeling lonely -- nighttime is the worst. I dread going to bed knowing that I will just lay there, feeling horrible and alone, and think for hours. During the day I am better because I have work and friends to keep me distracted. At night, though, I end up calling people that aren't good for me, hook up with the wrong people, or drink too much just to make myself feel better. I want to be at a place where I am OK with being alone. Where do I even start?" – Lonely in San Diego

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: #BeingLOVEDIs charity event is a big success

On Friday, Jan. 18, I asked the San Diego community to come together at 1202 nightclub in Hillcrest to help me support Christie’s Place. I could not be more grateful, because the event was a huge success!

We raised over $2,000 for a great charity, and so many people came out to help pull it all together.

My favorite San Diego photographer, Sean Capshaw (owner of Resolusean), took pictures in the BeingLOVEDIs Photo Booth. We got so many great shots and creative responses!

Being loved is part of being human; everyone is different and so are the perspectives on love. It is universal.

Everyone knows the feeling and understands the concept. We all want to be loved and to give love back. Being loved has indescribable emotions that everyone connects with no matter the age, race, gender, economic status or world they live in.

In the Raw: 6 tips to overcome depression after the holidays

‘Tis the season to be jolly … except no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t seem to get cheerful. You made it through the holidays, but your depression hasn’t gone away. Better yet, you feel even more tired, lonely and hopeless.

Holiday music often sends this message that the season is full of happy times. But as a therapist, I see a different side of the holidays that the music doesn’t share. Holiday music doesn’t share how horribly painful it is for many people: It could be from relationships on the rocks to lonely nights, from deep sadness to money problems.

SDPIX celebrates 10 years!

SAN DIEGO – In today’s economy, it is often difficult for small-business owners to stay afloat for more than a few years. Some, though, have worked their way through the economic challenges and only grow and thrive.

Such is the case with Hale Media, the parent company of San Diego Pix (SDPIX) and San Diego Gay & Lesbian News (SDGLN), which will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its SDPIX brand this Saturday night with a party at “Laser Party” at Rich’s nightclub.

#BeingLOVEDIs : What does being loved mean to you?

As a therapist, I am always working with relationships.

In fact, my daily work is surrounded around the topics of love and community.

As such, I've come to realize that humans are like pack animals, using community for support and comfort.

We are hardwired to be connected and attached to others (including our pets!).

Love comes in many different sizes, shapes and forms.

The expression of love may come through gift giving, words of affirmation, physical touch, text messages, and more.

In the Raw: The Facebook "status" dilemma

It takes just a few seconds, but changing your relationship status on Facebook says a lot and can have damaging effects.

Sure, when a break-up happens you’ll want to alter your profile to reflect your true status; but, if you change your status without first informing your significant other, or out of spite, it can create real problems.

Before you change your Facebook relationship status, ask yourself a few questions.

Have you officially ended the relationship in private? What are your motives? Do you already plan on changing it back within a few days?
