Dustin Lance Black, Lance Bass to appear in San Diego reading of "8"

SAN DIEGO -- A one-night only reading of Dustin Lance Black's play "8" will be staged in San Diego on Monday, Nov. 19, at the Birch North Park Theatre, and include a number of high-profile cast members, including Black, Lance Bass, Bruce Vilanch, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and City Councilmember Todd Gloria.

Production & Celebrity Entertainment, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact, will present the reading of "8," which is a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8.

Bob Filner elected mayor of San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Bob Filner won election as mayor of San Diego early today with 51% of the vote, according to preliminary results.

Carl DeMaio, whose election would have made history as the first gay Republican to take the reins of one of America’s largest cities, conceded the close race was over, during a news conference at 10 am today.

Surrounded by a group of teary-eyed supporters, DeMaio said at the conference that the city needs to begin the healing process after this tumultuous election.

U-T San Diego: Jerry Sanders to endorse Carl DeMaio for mayor

SAN DIEGO -- Mayor Jerry Sanders, who has often butted heads with City Councilman Carl DeMaio over the years, plans to endorse DeMaio to be his successor in the race for San Diego mayor, according to a source.

The decision by the popular Sanders will likely be a boost for DeMaio with 41 days left until the election. DeMaio, a Republican like Sanders, is vying against Democratic Rep. Bob Filner for the job.

Sanders is expected to make the formal announcement at a 12:15 p.m. news conference at Harbor Island Park.

San Diegans test-drive bike-sharing systems

SAN DIEGO -- As San Diego leaders discuss ways to make the city more bicycle-friendly, Mayor Jerry Sanders on Monday launched a bike share program during a demonstration hosted by Civic San Diego at Petco Park.

Public bike sharing is an innovative transportation system that provides public access to bicycles for short trips in an urban environment and promotes an affordable transportation alternative to driving for San Diego residents, commuters and visitors.

Multi-use field at Jefferson Elementary in North Park to be dedicated Thursday

SAN DIEGO -- North Park residents will now have another park space to use after local officials dedicate the new multipurpose joint-use field at Jefferson Elementary School.

Bipartisan group Mayors for the Freedom to Marry launches national campaign

WASHINGTON — Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide, today launched Mayors for the Freedom to Marry at a news conference held during the 80th annual U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting.

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry is a bipartisan group of 80 mayors who have pledged to support the freedom of same-sex couples to marry.
“If we truly believe in family values, we should value all families,” said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Mayors for the Freedom to Marry chair and president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
