San Diego Remembers to host vigil in response to Texas shooting of young lesbian couple

SAN DIEGO -- In response to the shooting of two young lesbians in Portland, Texas last weekend, San Diego Remembers will host a brief vigil at the site of the John Wear Hate Crimes Memorial Plaque in Hillcrest on Tuesday, July 3, at 8 pm.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18 were found Saturday in a nature area knee-deep in grass, and are believed to have been shot nine hours earlier. The shooting claimed the life of Olgin, and Chapa remains in serious but stable condition following emergency surgery.

SAN DIEGO – More than 300 people gathered at what is now the corner of Harvey Milk Street and Centre Street in Hillcrest to witness the unveiling of the signs that indicate the new street name at a late afternoon ceremony on Tuesday, May 22.

The ceremony was held on Milk’s birthday, who would have been 82 years old on Tuesday.

San Diego Remembers to commemorate 20 years since anti-gay murder of John Wear

SAN DIEGO -- To commemorate the 20 years that have passed since a local teenager was killed in Hillcrest because he was perceived to be gay, a local organization will host a small ceremony called "San Diego Remembers John Wear" on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Reports say that the 17-year-old Wear was walking down Essex Street in Hillcrest with a groups of friends on the evening of Dec. 13, 1991, when they became victims of a hate-motivated attack.

SAN DIEGO -- As bullying and hate violence continue to plague schools and communities across the nation, San Diego Remembers hopes to empower people to get involved and take a stand against it.

The organization will host the fourth annual San Diego Remembers: Matthew Shepard event on Tuesday, Oct. 11, which will include a rally, march and celebration.
