Hillcrest Pride Flag to fly high after ceremony Friday night

SAN DIEGO – After months of planning, fundraising and hard work, a rainbow flag will finally fly permanently over Hillcrest.

Friday at 6:30 pm, the Hillcrest Pride Flag will be raised for the first time during a special ceremony that will kick off “America’s Pride” weekend in San Diego. Community members who attend San Diego Pride’s annual Spirit of Stonewall Rally, which will be held on Harvey Milk and Normal streets in Hillcrest, will be able to witness the flag’s first official raising at the end of the program.

SAN DIEGO – Hillcrest will be taken over by men and women donning their highest high heels this Saturday for the second annual Amazing High Heel Race, a benefit for the Hillcrest Business Association’s community beautification projects.

The event, a neighborhood scavenger hunt in which participants must wear high heels to complete, celebrates the diversity of Hillcrest, which is known to be one of San Diego’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

Martinis Above Fourth to change ownership in mid-October

SAN DIEGO -- The owners of Martinis Above Fourth announced on Monday the sale of their popular Hillcrest bar, restaurant and community gathering spot to longtime San Diego residents Jim Simpson and Doru Tifui.

The venue, affectionately known by many in the community as MA4, has been owned by Chaz Weathers, Dale Dubach and John Osgood since 2004. In the nearly eight years that the trio has operated MA4, it has been transformed into a popular social hub playing host to numerous birthday and special occasion celebrations, live performances and charitable fundraisers.

VIDEO: New Hillcrest sign installed, to be re-lit Sunday during CityFest

SAN DIEGO -- Hillcrest is about to get a little bit brighter again. The iconic neighborhood sign that has hung over University Avenue near Fifth Avenue for decades was replaced early today with a new sign that includes LED technology.

Crews worked during the wee hours this morning to install the new $40,000 sign in time for a re-lighting ceremony Sunday during the 27th annual Hillcrest CityFest event.

SAN DIEGO -- Hillcrest is a few steps closer toward being a bit more colorful thanks to an army of high heel stomping community members and other donors who participated in and supported the Amazing High Heel Race.

More than $25,000 was raised as a result of the effort, which included a combination of donations from event participants and "legacy contributions" from four local business owners.
