Frankenstorm devastates the East Coast

Sandy, the Frankenstorm, lived up to her nickname on Monday as the monster storm slammed into the Jersey Shore and caused massive damage across much of the East Coast.

Deaths related to the killer storm were reported in seven states and in Canada. At least 10 people are dead in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg reported on Tuesday morning, and he feared the toll will climb as rescue efforts continue.

“This was a devastating storm,” Bloomberg said. “This is maybe the worst we have ever seen.”

Marriage equality in New York survives court challenge

NEW YORK – Marriage equality is safe in New York state.

Today, the state Court of Appeals denied a request by an Evangelical group called New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms that sought to overturn the marriage equality law that was approved by the state legislature and signed by the governor in June 2011.

This is the second attempt to overturn the marriage law. In early July, a state appellate court dismissed the challenge by the Evangelical group that claimed that the New York state Senate had violated the Open Meetings Law when it voted to approve the law.

Creators of "Camp Revelation" exposing ex-gay therapy, seeking help to make movie | VIDEO

Director Kerstin Karlhuber and screenwriter Jack Bryant are turning to Kickstarter to rustle up $50,000 to finish their film, "Camp Revelation," an expose on the dangers of the discredited ex-gay therapy.

As of Monday morning, they had raised about $4,000 toward their goal and turned to San Diego Gay & Lesbian News to get out the word.

NEW YORK – The victories keep stacking up in court: Ten in a row. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals today became the latest court to rule that the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, this time in the case involving Edith “Edie” Windsor.

Happy ending! "Flying Tortoise" gets the last laugh after cruel prank

SAN DIEGO -- A horrible prank at the expense of a helpless tortoise has gone unpunished, but the sad tale of the "Flying Tortoise" has concluded with a happy ending.

The land-dwelling reptile was the victim of a terrible joke when someone duct-taped the tortoise to several balloons and let them loose.

On Aug. 19, someone reported to Oceanside Police Department that a turtle taped to balloons had gotten stuck in a tree. The police informed the San Diego Humane Society, which safely rescued the tortoise and took him in.

My official election ballot arrived in the mail on Tuesday, and I was as excited as always to exercise my right to vote.
