Canada kick starts funding for gay rights initiatives in Uganda

OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada — A Canadian foreign affairs official acknowledged Friday that there are ongoing efforts to fund grassroots Ugandan LGBTQ advocacy organizations who are battling efforts by the Ugandan Parliament to pass that country’s proposed anti-homosexuality bill.

"Kill The Gays" bill is harming LGBTs in Uganda already

  • Excommunicated.
  • That’s what life is like for a gay young man in Uganda, as explained in a letter from Alan (not his real name).

    He sent the letter to members of the Ugandan parliament, urging them to reject the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which has already made life worse for LGBT people there.

    Amid fears that Uganda’s notorious “Kill The Gays” Anti-Homosexuality Bill will soon be revived in parliament, the country’s Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, has appeared to distance himself from aspects of the proposed legislation. He has implied that the government may not support the bill in its present form. This may be the reason it was not passed, as expected, in the run-up to Christmas.

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The tables could be turning on anti-gay agitator Scott Lively, whose evangelical preaching and homophobic writings have demonized LGBT people the world over.

    LGBT group's office in Uganda is vandalized

    SMUG, the LGBTI organization led by Frank Magishu, had its offices in Kampala, Uganda broken into and vandalized with almost all office property stolen during the Christmas holiday.

    It is unknown at this time if the motivation behind the attack was homophobic persecution. However given the anti-gay climate in Uganda and the fact that Ugandan House Speaker Rebecca Kadaga failed to deliver her promised “Kill The Gays” bill in time for Christmas, the timing of this attack is quite ominous.

    SAN DIEGO -- Christmastime continues to be a magical time for Joseph Bukombe, a San Diego resident who faces deportation to homophobic Uganda, where lawmakers want to pass the notorious "Kill The Gays" bill.

    On Dec. 23, 2011, Bukombe was released from federal detention in Otay Mesa after spending two years behind bars fighting deportation. He had been detained on a DUI charge.

    KAMPALA, Uganda – Parliament adjourned today without debating or voting on the draconian “Kill The Gays” bill. Lawmakers will not return to session until February 2013.

    Rebecca Kadaga, Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, had vowed to pass the “Kill The Gays” bill as a “Christmas gift” to the nation.

    Instead, Kadaga was at the Vatican getting blessed by the Pope – an action that is drawing widespread criticism.

    KAMPALA, Uganda – Parliament is running out of time to debate and vote on the notorious “Kill The Gays” bill, as the current session ends on Friday, Dec. 14.

    The Anti-Homosexuality Bill has fallen to No. 6 on today’s order paper, according to Ugandan LGBT activist Frank Mugisha. “Keep the pressure up,” Mugisha writes on his Facebook page.
