Lambda Legal urges Ninth Circuit to uphold law banning "ex-gay" therapy for California minors

SAN FRANCISCO -- - Lambda Legal, representing 12 regional and national organizations working with LGBT youth, filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today urging the court to uphold the California law prohibiting state-licensed mental health providers from using dangerous efforts to change sexual orientation - sometimes referred to as "ex-gay therapy" - with minors.

Oregon to remove gender identity exclusion for transgender employees from state health plan

PORTLAND, Ore. -- - Lambda Legal announced today that the State of Oregon has changed an employee health care policy to remove all language that denies coverage to transgender people for transition-related health care.

The change came in response to a lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal and cooperating attorney Jennifer Middleton on behalf of Alec Esquivel, who was denied insurance coverage as a State employee for a medically necessary surgery because he is transgender.

Appeals court temporarily blocks California law banning "ex-gay" therapy

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday temporarily delayed the start date of a new California law that protects LGBT youth from therapists who try to change their sexual orientation despite warnings by medical experts that these discredited practices put youth at risk of serious harm.

The new law was set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2013.

Wisconsin appeals court upholds state's domestic partner benefits

MADISON, Wisc. -- The Wisconsin Court of Appeals today upheld as constitutional the state's Domestic Partner Registry.

In affirming a lower court decision that the law does not violate the state's constitutional amendment banning marriage equality, the court stated:

"... it would 'take pages' to list the rights and obligations that go with marriages but not domestic partnerships ... It is not necessary to list that many here to demonstrate that ... the rights and obligations of marriage are not substantially similar to the rights and obligations of domestic partnerships."

Justice for married lesbian moms: Iowa court orders accurate death certificate for stillborn baby

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa District Court for Polk County ordered the state's Department of Public Health to issue an accurate death certificate to Jennifer and Jessica Buntemeyer after their son was stillborn in October of last year.

The couple's grief was compounded when the Iowa Department of Public Health erased Jenny's name from the death certificate.

In his ruling, District Judge Robert A. Hutchison referred to Lambda Legal's 2009 case affirming the freedom for same-sex couples to marry in Iowa, and wrote:

Supreme Court takes no action today on remaining gay-rights cases

WASHINGTON -- - The U.S. Supreme Court issued no new orders today in the remaining LGBT rights cases on its docket in the wake of its decision Friday to review the Proposition 8 challenge and one of four cases challenging the constitutionality of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act.

Two Lambda Legal cases remain on the docket: Brewer v. Diaz and U.S. Office of Personnel Management v Golinski.
