Two longtime LGBT activists honored at annual Local Heroes celebration

SAN DIEGO -- As part of its ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and responsible banking, Union Bank partnered with KPBS to honor 16 local individuals who are making a difference to enrich the lives of others, including longtime LGBT activists Jeri Dilno and Larry T. Baza.

The honorees were announced throughout 2012 as part of the Cultural Diversity Partnership, which recognizes and pays tribute to local heroes from eight diverse communities, and the year-long celebration of diversity culminated with a ceremony and reception last week, at the San Diego Natural History Museum.

Local LGBT activists Larry Baza and Jeri Dilno are recognized as Local Heroes

SAN DIEGO – Longtime local gay activists Larry Baza and Jeri Dilno are being recognized as 2012 Local Heroes in an annual celebration of LGBT Pride Month sponsored by Union Bank in partnership with KPBS in San Diego.

The 2012 Local Heroes campaign is designed to celebrate and pay tribute to extraordinary members of the community who are making a difference by improving their workplace, neighborhoods, region and the world.

Dilno said it was difficult to put into a few words what the Local Heroes award means to her.

SDSU honors LGBT graduates at third annual Lavender Graduation

SAN DIEGO – As the end of the academic year approaches, San Diego State University (SDSU) held its third annual Lavender Graduation Celebration on Tuesday, to honor some of the school’s LGBT and ally graduates.

Nearly 100 people attended the afternoon ceremony, held in a ballroom in the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center, including graduates, their family, friends, and other special guests. Over 30 students participated in the ceremony and received a rainbow “honor cord,” a certificate, and a chance to address the crowd.

San Diego Pride names recipients of awards to be bestowed on July 15

SAN DIEGO – Several individuals and groups will be honored during San Diego Pride weekend for their activism and support given to the LGBT community.

The honorees will be publicly recognized at Pride’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally, scheduled for 6:30 pm Friday, July 15, at the main festival stage at Marston Point in Balboa Park.

May 25 workshop to explain how to get involved in civic groups

SAN DIEGO -- A presentation detailing how to secure a position on a governmental commission in the City of San Diego will take place on Wednesday, May 25 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Logan Heights Branch Library.
