Testing for Tickets program encourages HIV testing, offers free San Diego Pride festival tickets

SAN DIEGO -- Thanks to a grant from San Diego LGBT Pride, local HIV testing programs Lead the Way and The Early Test are offering 250 free one-day San Diego LGBT Pride Festival tickets, between June 19 and July 10, as part of the Testing for Tickets program.

On World AIDS Day, a history of HIV

The term Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, wasn’t coined until the end of 1982 but was a serious problem for the previous decade.

The origin of HIV is still largely a mystery, however, it is thought that the virus was transferred to humans somewhere around 1930. The leading theory is that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has ancestral basis from the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV). How the virus was transferred is still unknown.

Lead the Way to offer free HIV testing on World AIDS Day

SAN DIEGO -- Lead the Way will offer free, confidential HIV tests to the community in honor of World AIDS Day, on Saturday, Dec. 1.

This year's World AIDS Day theme, "Getting to Zero," focuses on a world with zero new HIV infections.

100 free tickets to Pride of Hillcrest Block Party available via Testing for Tickets program

SAN DIEGO -- Testing for Tickets now has 100 free tickets to the first-ever Pride of Hillcrest Block Party on Friday, July 20. Local DJ and community leader Nicholas Moede donated 100 tickets to Testing for Tickets.

UCSD Antiviral Research Center hosts food drive for Mama's Pantry

SAN DIEGO -- University of California San Diego's (UCSD) Antiviral Research Center (AVRC) will host a food drive to benefit Mama's Kitchen today through March 19.

The event is in recognition of National Women & Girls HIV Awareness Day, which is observed March 10. According to AVRC, up to 94% of HIV-positive women and their families in San Diego County suffer from food insecurity, meaning that from day-to-day, they do not know where their next meal will come from.

Missiongathering Church to bring health and wellness fair to North Park

SAN DIEGO -- Following their 10 am service on Sunday, Nov. 13, the Missiongathering church will be hosting a Health and Wellness fair for the community, from noon to 4 pm.

Called the Wellness3 -- Mind, Body, Soul Health and Wellness Fair, this free event will be held on the church's recently acquired grounds, 3090 Polk Ave, located at the northwest corner of Illlinois and Polk, in North Park.

The event is open to the public and will feature valuable health and wellness information, and offer free giveaways and raffle prizes donated by local businesses and organizations.

VIDEO: Two UCSD programs offer easy access and incentives for HIV testing

SAN DIEGO -- Two programs based out of University of California San Diego (UCSD) are working to reach out to the community, with a focus on the LGBT community, to ensure that individuals are able to easily and comfortably access HIV testing.

The "Lead the Way" campaign and the Early Test Program's "Testing for Pride Tickets" provide community members with easy access and incentives for taking this step to protect their health.

Hillcrest Town Council to discuss redistricting at May 10 meeting

SAN DIEGO -- The next meeting of the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) will be held Tuesday, May 10, from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Joyce Beers Uptown Community Center, located in the Uptown District Shopping Center.

The organization was formed in 2007 to provide a voice for and enhance the quality of life for Hillcrest renters and homeowners while supporting actions that benefit the neighborhood.
