LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Toni Atkins on Boy Scouts' proposal

(Editor's note: Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins is a member of the California LGBT Legislative Caucus. As a San Diego City Councilmember, she led the fight to end the Boy Scouts’ free use of Balboa Park for their headquarters because of their discriminatory policies.)

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: What about those who were out, loud and proud?

(Editor’s note: In her weekly opinion piece on SDGLN’s Commentary page, Contributor Barb Hamp Weicksel wrote about this topic: ”The out, loud and proud myth of the gay community” in which she argues that times have changed for the LGBT movement and that some people now live by example instead of by confrontation. Needless to say, not everyone agrees with her point of view.)

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: LCR questions GOP's defense of DOMA

(Editor's note: House Republicans decided this week to incorporate ongoing counsel to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into the new Congressional Rules. To date, the House Republicans had spend about $2 million in taxpayer money to defend DOMA in court. The Justice Department and the Obama Administration believes DOMA is unconstitutional and refused to defend the law in court. Ten courts have ruled that parts of DOMA are unconstitutional, and one case has now reached the U.S. Supreme Court for review in March.)

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Why straight ally is wrong about Chick-fil-A protest

(Editor's note: This Letter to the Editor is addressed to Ken Derringer, a straight man and LGBT ally whose own Letter to the Editor was published Monday by San Diego Gay & Lesbian News. Derringer raised the issue of tolerance after many in the LGBT community criticized Chick-fil-A after the company president acknowledged that he spent corporate profits to support anti-gay activism.)

Dear Ken Derringer,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Amid Chick-fil-A outrage, a question of tolerance is raised

(Editor's note: This letter was sent to an SDGLN staffer by a lifelong friend since high school. The friend has been a staunch supporter and ally for many years of the staffer, but is also a devout Christian. The recent backlash against Chick-fil-A because of their CEO's public admissions to being anti-gay, caused this LGBT ally to question tolerance on either side.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Ahead of Pride Parade, homophobia rears its ugly head in Hillcrest

This weekend is Gay Pride in San Diego. I was (considering) not going to the festivities this year, thinking that it's going to be the "same old thing." However, Wednesday evening, my partner Patrick D. Riedling and I experienced a very disappointing situation that left me wondering ...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Turning your back will accomplish nothing

I’ve been thinking quite a bit about Harvey Milk, and what he said.

“The only thing they have to look forward to is hope. And you have to give them hope.”

I’ve been thinking about it, because some in San Diego’s LGBT community plan to turn their backs on Carl DeMaio’s contingent in Saturday’s Pride parade. I think this is misguided.

We choose what we want to cultivate. Look forward, chin up, smile; say, “yes,” and say, “love.” You will cultivate hope and good things and progress.

Turn your back, cast your eyes away, and shake your head. You will cultivate nothing.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The “lesbian and gay vs. gay and lesbian” debate

(Editor's note: Wendy Sue Biegeleisen is a well-known activist in San Diego. As our community is getting ready to celebrate Pride, she looks back at the history of LGBT rights from the lesbian and feminist points of view.)

Once upon a time, gay men respected lesbians and we fought together for equal rights.

This discussion of “lesbian and gay vs. gay and lesbian” has been happening since the Stonewall era. After I came out in 1976 and joined the fight for equality, I was involved in many, many of these discussions.
