More evidence equality is good for business

WASHINGTON – The evidence that LGBT equality is good for business is mounting, according to two new reports released late Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO – An overwhelming majority of readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll say they believe that President Barack Obama will support full LGBT equality during this second term.

Our poll question was: Will President Obama push for full LGBT equality in his second term?

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 88% of readers think that the President will go all out in support of full LGBT equality, and 12% say they don’t.

Todd Akin's jaw-dropping stances on women, LGBT Americans

WASHINGTON – Missouri GOP Congressman and Senate hopeful Todd Akin, who this weekend claimed that “legitimate rape” rarely led to pregnancy when discussing a woman’s right to choose, has an equally abysmal track record on issues of LGBT equality.

The Human Rights Campaign is joining with PROMO, Missouri’s statewide LGBT advocacy organization, in condemning Akin’s remarks and his anti-LGBT history.

Man walks across America with rainbow flag to spread dream of LGBT equality

On a March day last year, Richard Noble decided it was high time to take a walk; after 15 months and 2,700 miles, he became the first man to walk across America with the rainbow pride flag.

His journey began in San Francisco, where he spent his first night sleeping in front of the Harvey Milk memorial. Fast-forward to June, when Noble arrived in Jacksonville — after being on the road for over a year — he was greeted at the finish line by the Rainbow House, along with over 100 other supporters to celebrate the accomplishment.

Anti-gay, anti-Obama lawyer pushing initiative in Washington opposing marriage equality

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington state legislature won’t take up the marriage equality bill until Jan. 23, which observers say has a good chance of passage, but anti-gay forces are already on the attack.

Everett attorney Stephen Pidgeon, who is well-known in the state for opposing gay rights, has filed an initiative that would define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Pidgeon has until July to gather 240,000 valid signatures to get the initiative on the November ballot.

Poignant Belarus video shows that love comes in all forms, straight and gay

MINSK, Belarus -- Video director Max Anatskaya has released the first-ever Belarusian LGBT video in support of equality.

The three-minute video tells the poignant love stories of two couples: one straight and one gay. It addresses the issues of love, warmth and tenderness without resorting to stereotypes or making judgments.

The video is now showing on gayby.net.

Lawsuit filed on behalf of lesbian couple rejected by Hawaii bed and breakfast

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Lambda Legal filed a discrimination lawsuit today in the First Circuit Court of Hawaii on behalf of a lesbian couple rejected by a commercial business establishment, Aloha Bed & Breakfast, because of the owner's personal antigay beliefs.

Small businesses don't mind costs of committing to LGBT equality

According to the Center for American Progress (CAP) this week, the majority of small business owners support full equality and offer whatever they can in equal benefits and programs to their LGBT employees.

The results of a nationwide poll show that most small business owners support the Employee Non-discrimination Act (ENDA), which outlaws employment discrimination against gay and transgender workers; most already prohibit discrimination on this basis, and respondents reported zero costs associated with their inclusive non-discrimination policies.

New executive director at EQCA suddenly steps down

SAN FRANCISCO -- Executive Director Roland Palencia has chosen to step down as of Oct. 14, Equality California (EQCA) announced on Monday.

Palencia had been selected to succeed long-time Executive Director Geoff Kors in May. No word yet on a replacement for Palencia, but EQCA says they will release transition plan by the end of this week.

"During his tenure with Equality California, Roland Palencia did important work to build diverse and inclusive coalitions and engage and reconnect our movement," said Cathy Schwamberger, Equality California Institute Board Chair.
