Trans Fit: Happy, healthy holiday eating

Create and Stick to a Plan

To help maintain healthy habits, identify potential problem areas and anticipate situations that may present challenges.

Allow yourself some slack and don’t aim for perfection.

Choose to focus on two areas at most, such as sticking to a firm workout schedule and avoiding the cheese tray if that is a weakness.

By recognizing and anticipating your primary weaknesses, you are more likely to stick with a plan, she says.

Maintain a Regular Schedule

While the holidays can be hectic, it is important to eat at normal mealtimes.

Scott Herman's Getting Fit VIDEO: Episode 13 of Scott & Sean's Q&A!

Scott and Sean answered more viewer questions this week:

(1:03) Anthony Kesterson

Hey Scott and Sean! I'm almost 24 years old and just beginning to change my body. I bought dietary supplements; N.O.-XPLODE, CELLMASS, and SYNTHA-6.

I'm just not sure how to start exercising, or what exercises are good for me to start with. I don't have any weights at home, but I have a fitness center where I live.

I work until 7 pm every day and I'm off on Wednesday and Sundays, so when is the best time to take the supplements that I bought, and when should I actually work out?

Trans Fit: Be Eggstravagant!

It’s been called everything from “incredible” and “Nature’s perfect food” to “lowly.”

For years, the egg was maligned by the scientific community, owing to concerns over elevated cholesterol levels and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Thanks to a recent media campaign, the egg is now being viewed in a more positive light by health experts and consumers, alike, and here’s why:

Scott Herman's Getting Fit VIDEO: Episode 12 of Scott & Sean's Q & A!

Sean and I tackled some pretty thoughtful questions this week. We never knew black cherries were such a magical food for weightlifting!

Boot~ique: How short is too short?

Ah … the age old question. You do know we are talking about workouts, right?

Many people have asked this question, and the answer really lies in the intensity of the workout.

In fact, the intensity of the workout is actually more important than the length of time and can make a difference in total fat loss because of how the body uses its energy.

The body may burn fat or it may burn carbohydrates. Depending on how intensely an activity is performed determines which of the two is burned.

Trans Fit: Common questions about health and fitness

Are you supposed to gain weight first before you lose weight?

That depends on your goal. If you are looking to add a few pounds of muscle mass before leaning up, you may want to try gaining some weight first. If you are gaining weight while trying to lose weight, then your caloric intake is greater than your energy expenditure.

Take a close look at how much you are actually eating (weighing and measuring food, and tracking it in a food journal).

What exercises can I do to lose weight—for instance, to get rid of my stomach—and gain definition?

Trans Fit: Beware of food labels

Beware of health claims on food labels; packaging can be deceiving.

Ever wonder about the difference between reduced fat and low fat?  Or does ‘light’ on a label really mean no fat?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has strict guidelines on how these food label terms can be used.  Remember packaging is a sales tool to attract you to an item.

Stay with the CHRIS system and you will never go wrong.

A 90-day challenge: Bootcamp is for tough gals (and wussies like me)

Back in August of 1980, I entered an eight-week bootcamp for the United States Navy. I was 20 years old and presumably in okay shape, but every single day of those first few weeks, I spent each and every one of them just hoping and praying I would get through it and on to the next; most of the time I honestly thought I was going to die. Just die.

But I never did die, and in fact after getting over the hump of those first few weeks, things got much easier; the focus shifted to the end game -- finishing those eight weeks -- and it was all downhill from there.
