The study, led by Richard G. Wight from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the UCLA Williams Institute, was published in the American Journal of Public Health.

Get a LIFE: The health benefits of yoga

Last week we discussed what yoga is and explored some of the various traditions and offerings found in the yoga world.

Yet, irrespective of the style, yoga carries with it health benefits that are sparking curiosity.

What can yoga do for you?

1. Deeper Breathing: The breath is one of the primary ways to remove unneeded waste from the body. Through yoga you can stretch out your lung tissue, and increase the amount of oxygen you take in and the CO2 the body takes out with every exhale.

Get a LIFE: What is yoga?

With yoga studios on every corner it is important to get a better understanding of why this ancient tradition is captivating the modern world and spreading like wildfire.

Yoga encompasses much more than simply a movement practice. At its core it invites us to build greater awareness not only of our body, but also of our breath, mind/emotions, and intuitive capabilities.

The practice of ‘hatha’ yoga is the most well known, as it encompasses an inquiry into the aforementioned windows of awareness through the instrument of the body.

The Center seeks responses to LGBT health survey

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center is conducting a survey to learn more about the personal barriers that members of the LGBT community experience when trying to access healthcare services.

Information obtained from the survey will be used to develop a health self-advocacy program at The Center.

Those who live in San Diego County and self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or with a sexual orientation and/or gender identity other than heterosexual, are encouraged to take the short survey to help The Center better understand the community's healthcare needs.

#BeingLOVEDIs : What does being loved mean to you?

As a therapist, I am always working with relationships.

In fact, my daily work is surrounded around the topics of love and community.

As such, I've come to realize that humans are like pack animals, using community for support and comfort.

We are hardwired to be connected and attached to others (including our pets!).

Love comes in many different sizes, shapes and forms.

The expression of love may come through gift giving, words of affirmation, physical touch, text messages, and more.

Get a LIFE: Are you a sun lover?

Having grown up in Israel, the sun has been a friend for many years. After living in the East Coast for seven years, I am extremely happy to be back in the land of sunshine.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, a friend took me up to Laguna Beach to experience the joys of tight swim trunks, laughter, and playful frolicking in the sun.

From drag queens in patriotic attire -- to a group of men turned professional cheerleaders throwing one another up in the air -- fun was everywhere.

Brown Rice instead of White

Late night sushi date? Opt for brown rice instead of white. Brown rice is a whole grain and contains health boosting nutrients such as: magnesium, vitamin E, zinc, and iron.

Plus, just one cup of brown rice provides more than twice the amount of fiber than white.

Get a LIFE: Got stress? Try breathing an "ocean-breath"

One of the mantras I love to live by is that the simple things often make the most potent difference in life.

I have found this teaching to be true in my world through my waking morning rituals, one-on-one connection with friends, or the ability to take one tiny step towards a larger goal.

Even with the tools that yoga and holistic health and nutrition have offered me, stress is still a reality in my life.

To-do lists, errands, projects, cooking, keeping in touch, managing finances, and running a personal business, all take their toll.
