LGBT homeless youth drop-in center in NYC "destroyed" in Frankenstorm

NEW YORK -- A major homeless drop-in center for LGBT youth in New York City has been badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

The Ali Forney Center in the Chelsea area of Manhattan said on its website that the so-called Frankenstorm that devastated many areas of the upper East Coast, including New Jersey and New York, had sustained major water damage from the mega-storm and left it unable to take care of the Big Apple's homeless LGBT youth.

LOS ANGELES – About 40% of homeless youth are LGBT and nearly all homeless youth service providers in the U.S. now serve LGBT youth, according to a comprehensive report on LGBT youth homelessness released Thursday.

Nearly seven in 10 (68%) respondents indicated that family rejection was a major factor contributing to LGBT youth homelessness, making it the most cited factor. More than half (54%) of respondents indicated that abuse in their family was another important factor contributing to LGBT homelessness.

Bea Arthur Residence for Homeless LGBT Youth gets $3 million in New York City funds

NEW YORK — The Ali Forney Center — a homeless shelter for LGBT youth in New York City — will receive $3.3 million from the city to renovate an East Village property, according to a statement released Monday.

The city owned property will be transferred the Ali Forney Center for renovations, resulting in 18 additional beds for the program. The program currently has 77 beds in 9 different facilities and two drop-in centers for homeless LGBTQ youth.

The public is welcome to attend the lecture, which was organized to focus on the diversity of the LGBTQ and ally community. Through the FLUID series, SDSU hopes to expand the knowledge and understanding of important topics while building community.

NEW YORK – Actor/comedian Tracy Morgan began his quest to repair his public image on Friday after a homophobic rant during a June 3 comedy show in Nashville, Tenn., brought nearly universal condemnation.

Morgan met with LGBT youths from the Ali Forney Center, the nation’s largest organization serving homeless LGBT youth. He also met with Elke Kennedy, whose 20-year-old son, Sean, was killed in an anti-gay hate crime.
