Active duty Marine officer proposes to partner at White House reception

WASHINGTON -- An active duty U.S. Marine Corps officer proposed to his same-sex partner during the annual Holidays Open House at the White House over the weekend.

Capt. Matthew Phelps, on bended knee, proposed to his partner Ben Schock just outside the entrance to the blue Room Saturday evening. The historic proposal is believed to be the first ever by a same-sex couple at the White House.

Lesbian wife of Army officer denied membership in Fort Bragg spouses' club

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The same-sex spouse of a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel stationed at Fort Bragg has been denied membership in a base club for officers’ spouses, sparking protests and accusations from a national military spouses organization that the woman was prevented from joining only because she is a lesbian.

Cameroon court upholds 3-year prison term for gay text message

DOUALA, Cameroon -- An appeals court in the African nation of Cameroon on Monday upheld a three-year sentence against a man found guilty of homosexual conduct for sending a text message to another that contained a photo of himself holding a sign that said, “I’m very much in love with you.”

Jean-Claude Roger Mbede, 32, who had been provisionally released on bail in July after serving a year and a half in prison, said he wasn't sure whether he could withstand more jail time given the conditions he faced there.

Montana Supreme Court rejects equal benefits for same-sex couples

HELENA, Mont. -- The Montana Supreme Court on Monday upheld a lower court's decision to reject an "overly broad" request that same-sex couples receive the same protections and benefits as married heterosexual couples.

In a 4-3 decision, the Court sided with Helena, Mont., District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock when he dismissed the suit in April 2011.

LGBT leaders to House GOP: Stop wasting tax dollars defending DOMA

WASHINGTON – Leaders of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organizations today called on the House Republican leadership to stop funding the legal defense of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

DOMA forbids the federal government from recognizing the marriages of lawfully wedded same-sex couples, legally married in states that allow gay and lesbian couples to obtain marriage licenses.

Last week, the Los Angeles Times ran an op-ed by Michael McGough that focused heavily on Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s recent, and not-so-recent, comments about LGBT people. In a recent exchange with Princeton University student, Duncan Hosie, Scalia refuses to see being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender as identity characteristics, but only as behavior. Thus the title of the op-ed, “For Scalia, no gay people, just gay sex?”

Justice for married lesbian moms: Iowa court orders accurate death certificate for stillborn baby

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa District Court for Polk County ordered the state's Department of Public Health to issue an accurate death certificate to Jennifer and Jessica Buntemeyer after their son was stillborn in October of last year.

The couple's grief was compounded when the Iowa Department of Public Health erased Jenny's name from the death certificate.

In his ruling, District Judge Robert A. Hutchison referred to Lambda Legal's 2009 case affirming the freedom for same-sex couples to marry in Iowa, and wrote:

Cage fighter: "Sex with men doesn’t make you gay or bisexual, just like a cigarette doesn’t make you a smoker"

Cage fighter Alex Reid has talked about his past of having sex with other men in an interview with Jeremy Kyle.

Chantelle Houghton, who is the mother of Reid’s daughter Dolly had claimed in the past that Reid “had sex with men and prostitutes” and claimed their relationship broke down because of another man.


Answering Kyle’s question “are you bisexual?” Reid said:”I … no … I don’t smoke but I have tried a cigarette.

 Experimentation is not orientation … I like women.”
