Maryland: Same-sex weddings can begin New Year's Day

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Marriage officials in Maryland can begin processing marriage applications for same-sex couples, allowing them to wed on New Year's Day, according to an opinion by the state's Attorney General.

Maryland AG Douglas Gansler released a lengthy opinion Thursday that makes it possible for gay and lesbian couples to apply for and process marriage licenses to facilitate January 1st ceremonies, and still comply with the mandatory waiting period in Maryland law.

Maine: Same-sex wedding can begin on Dec. 29

PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine's new freedom to marry law, which allows same-sex couples to receive a marriage license, will take effect on Saturday, Dec. 29.

According to the Office of the Secretary of State, the certified election results for the state were signed off on by Gov. Paul LePage on Thursday, Nov. 29. The new law becomes effective 30 days from that date.

Neighbors invited to Hillcrest community holiday potluck on Dec. 11

SAN DIEGO -- Community members are welcome to celebrate the holidays with friends and neighbors at the Hillcrest History Guild's annual holiday potluck on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6:30 pm.

The event is organized each year to bring neighbors together to socialize, meet and spread holiday cheer.

City council appoints Minneapolis' first female, openly gay police chief

The Minneapolis city council on Friday confirmed 25-year veteran officer Janee Harteau as the city's new Chief of Police, and in doing so Harteau becomes the first woman and first openly gay officer to serve as police chief.

The council voted 11-0 to confirm Harteau, 48, after council members and Mayor R.T. Rybak gushed praise for the new chief.

“I love the fact that we will have a chief who has worked her way up,” said Rybak, who officially nominated Harteau to become the city’s next chief of police. “She’s a smart cop, a savvy administrator and a natural leader,” he said.

THEATER REVIEW: Circle Circle dot dot’s “Street. Art. Prophets.”

Five plays, four playwrights, four directors and five actors explore the local underground art scene (graffiti art, tagging, rap), the creative process, and the art establishment in Circle Circle dot dot’s “Street. Art. Prophets.”

Model convicted in grisly murder of celebrity journalist

A jury in New York has convicted Renato Seabra, a former Portuguese model, of the grisly murder of celebrity journalist Carlos Castro in a New York hotel last year, just after the victim had ended their relationship.

Seabra, 23, killed Castro, 65, in January 2011, and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a charge of second degree murder at Manhattan criminal court.

Singapore couple sue to end sodomy law

A Singaporean gay couple will challenge the country’s rarely enforced sodomy law which they say labels them as criminals.

Gary Lim and Kenneth Chee, who have been partners for 15 years, filed their challenge with Singapore’s High Court after the country’s Court of Appeals dropped a sodomy charge against a man charged with having oral sex with another man in a public toilet and replaced it with a gender non-specific obscenity law.

The man, Tang Eng Hong, had challenged the constitutionality of Singapore’s 377A sodomy law and the couple hope to make use of that landmark ruling.
