SDSU to host the Big Gay BBQ

SAN DIEGO -- As a Halloween treat, San Diego State University's (SDSU) LGBT Student Union (LGBTSU) will host the twice yearly Big Gay BBQ, today from 5-11 pm.

Since this semester's event falls on Halloween, the event will have a Halloween theme and include a costume contest with prizes. There will also be a resource fair, free food and drinks, a marriage photo booth, open mic and dance party.

LGBT youth who are out are happier, but still face serious obstacles

Growing up gay is not easy, for any generation.

Baby boomers and their LGBT elders, for example, lived at a time when information about LGBT issues was almost non-existent and when there were no role models on television or in popular culture. Many of them grew up not knowing another gay person in their school or community … until they moved to the big city and found a welcoming community in bars like the Stonewall Inn in New York City or The Club in San Diego.

COMMENTARY: Why aren't we making LGBT acceptance a community affair? | VIDEO

Last week in Iowa City I realized the LGBT movement spends too much effort preaching to gay urban audiences. We need to invest more time gathering support from straight neighbors, especially in suburban and rural areas, so that LGBT acceptance becomes a full community affair.

Although I was cold from the rain during my few days in Iowa City, my heart was warm from seeing firsthand a local community energized to advance LGBT acceptance.

Who was the first human bully? As I contemplate October’s designation as National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, I wonder that very thing.

If we see bullies as individuals who assert their dominance over a weaker individual to achieve their own ends, was it the first human that recognized themselves as stronger and hungrier than the rest of the tribe? We see and understand this trait in animals but, in an enlightened civilization, why does it continue to happen among humans?

Harvest Howl to benefit LGBT youth housing

SAN DIEGO -- Tickets are available for the seventh annual Harvest Howl, a fundraiser for The San Diego LGBT Community Center's Youth Housing Project (YHP), taking place Thursday, Oct. 25.

The event, which will place at Top of the Park, is organized each year by MARYAH - Metro Area Real Estate Professionals for Young Adult Housing.

The event will include food from a over a dozen local restaurants, a hosted bar during the first hour, live entertainment, a silent auction and prizes.

Lambda Legal launches mobile resource for LGBT youth

NEW YORK -- Lambda Legal today announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind online and mobile resource for LGBT youth.

The "Know Your Rights" hub will ultimately make all of Lambda Legal's resources more accessible online as well as on mobile devices including smart phones. The first hub was developed for LGBT youth and will provide comprehensive information about the laws and policies in place at the state and federal level to protect young people.

CALIFORNIA BANS 'EX-GAY' THERAPY

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California Gov. Jerry Brown made history late Saturday night by signing a landmark bill that will protect LGBT youth from psychological abuse by deceitful mental health professionals who falsely claim to be able to change their sexual orientation or gender expression.

San Diego Pride to host first-ever Youth Empowerment Academy

SAN DIEGO -- In an effort to provide a space for youth to emerge into leadership roles in the community, San Diego Pride will host its first ever Youth Leadership Academy on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Students and youth between the ages of 16-23 are welcome to apply to be a part of the academy program, which will train them on how to be an active leader in both their school and community. The one-day seminar will include outdoor activities, bonding exercises, and empowering workshops, and introduce participants to topics such as empowerment, sexual identity, school advocacy, and network building.
