COMMUNITY PROFILE: Walter G. Meyer

Walter G. Meyer is one of those people who just seems to genuinely care about his community and the environment.

The 48-year-old hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is single, and moved to San Diego 19 years ago.

He can often be seen giving his time on weekends to a number of causes, and is also quick to support these local LGBT and environmental organizations by capturing the events he attends on film. His photos adorn many of the social media pages of the nonprofits he volunteers for, helping to spotlight the organization's work.

LGBT youth to gather May 19 at UCLA for "Queer Youth Empowerment Day"

LOS ANGELES -- LGBT youth are invited to the upcoming "Queer Youth Empowerment Day," taking place Saturday, May 19, at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

The free conference is designed to bring LGBTQ youth of color as well as their teachers, parents and allies together for a unique educational experience at UCLA. Hosted by UCLA’s Project 1, the conference will explore the issues that LGBTQ youth of color face in the 21st century, with the hope of inspiring and empowering them to pursue higher education and become agents of transformative change in their communities.

FILM REVIEW: "Bully" has a powerful impact on audiences

SAN DIEGO – On the same day that it was announced that the documentary “Bully” would receive a PG-13 rating, community members packed an auditorium of UltraStar Mission Valley Theatre to watch an advance screening of the film.

The documentary, which opened in select theaters throughout the United States last week, made its debut in San Diego Thursday evening.

WEDNESDAY: SDSU lecture series to discuss LGBT homeless youth

SAN DIEGO -- The second lecture in San Diego State University's new Finding Leadership Under Identity (FLUID) series will be a discussion on LGBT homeless youth on Wednesday, March 21, at 6:30 pm.

The public is welcome to attend the lecture, which was organized to focus on the diversity of the LGBTQ and ally community. Through the FLUID series, SDSU hopes to expand the knowledge and understanding of important topics while building community.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Patrick Wallace

Giving back to the community has always been a part of Patrick Wallace's nature. For years, he has participated in charity events and volunteer opportunities as a way of helping those less fortunate.

Wallace's latest endeavor is A Note To My Kid, which has received national attention for its attempt to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.

Wallace, who was raised in San Diego, is 36-years old and is happily taken by his partner Mike Curry.

Applications available for Friends of Project 10 student scholarship

PASADENA, Calif. -- Friends of Project 10 has opened the application period for its annual "Models of Excellence" competition, which awards college scholarships to the selected recipients.

Student scholarships of $1,000, $2,000, and $3,000 will be awarded to high school seniors graduating from public, private and parochial schools in Southern California who have advanced the civil rights of the LGBT community. Applicants must reside in Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, or Ventura counties.

VIDEO: San Diego youth to attend launch of Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation

BOSTON – Several California youth, including one from San Diego, have been selected to travel to Harvard University this week to help Lady Gaga launch her new Born This Way Foundation on Wednesday, Feb. 29.

The foundation, led by Lady Gaga’s mother Cynthia Germanotta, was founded in 2011 to foster a more accepting society where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. Through its programs, the organization hopes to empower young people to build a braver, kinder world.

PFLAG San Diego to discuss cyber bullying at meeting Monday

SAN DIEGO -- PFLAG San Diego will include a special presentation on cyber bullying at its monthly meeting at 7 pm Monday, Feb. 27.

Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gay (PFLAG) is a support, education, and advocacy organization with chapters throughout the world. The San Diego chapter is an all volunteer group made up of parents, family and friends of LGBT people.

Applications for PFLAG San Diego's student scholarship program due March 16

SAN DIEGO -- Local students looking for extra money to cover their higher education expenses have until Friday, March 16, to submit applications for the 14th annual PFLAG San Diego LGBTQ Student Scholarship.

Olivia Dorman, chair of PFLAG's scholarship committee, said that her organization granted seven awards last year, ranging from $1,000 tp $2,000, and encouraged all eligible students to apply this year.

SDSU to launch LGBT lecture series Monday with inaugural discussion on DADT

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State University will launch its FLUID Lecture Series on Monday, Feb. 20, with a presentation on the repeal of LGBT identity in the U.S. military following the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
