Zero-tolerance policies perpetuate a school-to-prison pipeline for LGBT youth

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate held a landmark hearing recently on ending the nation’s school-to-prison pipeline that affirmed that gay and transgender youth also face harsher punishments in schools than other students, which disproportionately pipeline them into the juvenile justice system.

"Amazing Race" winners to bullied gay youth: "You're Amazing!"

"The Fabulous Beekman Boys," recent winners of the "The Amazing Race," say they have received over 8000 congratulation wishes since winning the reality TV show, but one letter in particular touched them in a personal way.

According to winners Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, one of the first letters they received this week came from a mother with a gay son named Colin, who has been dealing with bullying and harassment due to his sexual orientation:

Macy's employee hailed as hero in Oregon shooting rampage

A Macy's employee in Clackamas, Ore., is being hailed as a hero for using his knowledge of the shopping complex to hustle customers out of the building during Tuesday's shooting rampage at the mall that left three people dead.

Allan Fonseca, who works at Lancome counter in Macy's, was waiting on Jocelyn Lay when they heard shots fired about 3:30 p.m. Thinking quickly, Fonseca got her behind the counter to hide, reported ABC News.

Sen. Marco Rubio: You homosexuals are sinners, but I don't judge

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), already mentioned as a possible GOP presidential candidate for 2016, said he believes homosexuality is a sin, but that he does not "pass judgement."

"I can tell you what faith teaches and faith teaches that it is," said Rubio, when asked by Politico’s Mike Allen earlier this week if homosexuality is a sin.

Male students forced to hold hands as punishment criticized as bullying

MESA, Ariz. -- Two Arizona high school students were forced to hold hands in front of their classmates as punishment this week for fighting.

Critics are calling the discipline a form of bullying because it subjected the students to taunting and name-calling, and evoked anti-gay sentiments.

Middle school teacher suspended for promoting diversity

SOUTH LYON, Mich. -- A Detroit-area middle school teacher has been suspended after playing a song in class that included lyrics about harassment faced by gay youth.

The song, "Same Love," was played during Susan Johnson's eighth-grade performing arts class at South Lyon Centennial Middle School, at the request of a student.

"This is one of the things in my school that we're trying to practice and we're trying to instill in our students is tolerance to diversity," Johnson explained.

Russian Parliament to consider adopting national anti-gay legislation

MOSCOW — The Russian State Parliament will hear the first reading of a federal level bill that is designed after a series of regional laws banning so-called "propaganda of homosexualism."

According to a spokesperson for the Putin government, Russian lawmakers have put the measure on the legislative calender for December 19, 2012. The Parliament will consider adopting a national ban on "gay propaganda" similar to those already existing in St. Petersburg and nine other Russian Oblasts (regions).

UNAIDS: 50% drop in new HIV infections across 25 countries

GENEVA, Switzerland -- A new World AIDS Day report by the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows that a more than 50% reduction in the rate of new HIV infections has been achieved across 25 low- and middle-income countries –– more than half in Africa, the region most affected by HIV.

“The pace of progress is quickening—what used to take a decade is now being achieved in 24 months,” said Michel Sidibé, executive director of UNAIDS.
