Religious Right legal group: Gays can't force Christian clerks to issue same-sex marriage licenses

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A Christian legal group on Monday sent a memorandum to marriage officials in the three states where gay marriage was legalized in last week's elections, advising them they "do not have to violate their faith or conscience by personally issuing licenses to applicants who are of the same sex."

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF, formerly Alliance Defense Fund) a American conservative Christian nonprofit organization, sent the advisory to municipal clerks and other officials responsible for issuing marriage licenses in Maine, Maryland and Washington.

Catholic teen denied Confirmation over pro-gay marriage Facebook post

BARNESVILLE, Minn. -- A Catholic priest in Minnesota has denied Confirmation to a 17-year-old student after seeing a picture on his Facebook page last month which the teen in which he expressed opposition to the state's failed anti-gay marriage amendment.

Lennon Cihak was pictured in front an altered campaign sign which original read “Vote Yes” on the Minnesota Marriage Amendment -- which would have changed the state’s constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. Lennon had scribbled out the “yes” and replaced it with “NO!”

Obama nominates openly gay, African-American judge to federal bench

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama sent the names of seven judges to the Senate Wednesday as his nominees for currently vacant slots in the federal judiciary, including an openly gay African-American nominee.

Judge William L. Thomas was nominated Wednesday to an opening on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Boy Scouts no longer eligible for grants under new policy by UPS charity

ATLANTA -- The charity arm of United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS), announced Monday a new policy that will “cease all future funding to the Boy Scouts until gay Scouts and leaders are welcome within the organization.”

The UPS Foundation has previously contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Boy Scouts, despite the organization’s anti-gay policy.

SALEM, Ore. -- After fiercely contested races around the state, Democrats are poised to take over Oregon’s House of Representatives with a 34-26 majority, clearing the path for the ascension of openly lesbian House Democratic Leader Tina Kotek to the Speaker's chair.

The victory breaks the previous split legislative body, that saw a 30-30 tie in the state House.

BREAKING NEWS! Voters in Washington state approve marriage for gay and lesbian couples

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Voters in the state of Washington joined Maine and Maryland in approving marriage equality on Tuesday night.

About 52% of voters, according to preliminary results, supported the state legislature and Gov. Chris Gregoire, who signed the same-sex marriage bill into law on Feb. 13.

Anti-gay figures brought Referendum 74 to voters, who rejected it by a sizable margin.

ACLU challenges school's ban on "straight but supportive" T-shirts

CELINA, Ohio -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio on Thursday called on Celina High School administrators to reconsider their decision to prohibit students from wearing shirts that express their support of LGBT students, calling the ban "unconstitutional."

The ACLU action comes after some 20 students went to school Tuesday wearing home-made T-shirts that read “I Support… [Rainbow] Express Yourself” and “Straight but Supportive,” a show of support organized by sophomore Jimmy Walter.

Dallas County, Texas approves stipend for domestic partners' health insurance

DALLAS -- The Dallas County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to begin giving a stipend to unmarried and gay employees whose partners purchase individual health insurance because they aren’t eligible for coverage under the county’s benefits program.
