But according to the 43-year old trans man, nerves are good.

"If I didn't get nervous I'd think that something is wrong, like I wasn't in it anymore," he told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News. "[That feeling] makes you commit to your art.

VIDEO: Transgender funnyman Ian Harvie hopes to produce first-ever mainstream cable comedy special

PORTLAND, Maine -- Back in January 2002, Ian Harvie had never considered comedy as a career option.

Then one day, something very serendipitous happened … it was something so random, but so significant, it would change his life in many ways.

Harvie got a postcard in the mail from a man named Tim Ferrell, advertising a local comedy writing workshop. He's not sure how Ferrell got his name or address, but after kicking the idea around a little while, he decided to take the class.

"Tim Ferrell brought me to the dance," Harvie told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News.

I attended my first-ever Pride festival right here in San Diego back in 1988, which was held at the old Balboa Hospital on Park Boulevard -- the same place the shuttle bus now brings festival-goers to and from the festival's current location at Marston Point in beautiful Balboa Park.

NEWS ANALYSIS with VIDEOS: Military presence at San Diego Pride makes history, global headlines

SAN DIEGO – More than 250 active-duty servicemembers and veterans made history on Saturday by marching in the San Diego Pride Parade, drawing standing ovations and the loudest cheers from the estimated 155,000 people lining the parade route through Hillcrest.

The troops followed military regulations and did not march in their military uniforms, but instead wore T-shirts that indicated which branch of service they came from: Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Army and Air Force. Many waved American flags and rainbow flags, and others carried placards indicating their branch of service.
