Paraguay elects anti-gay, tobacco magnate as president

ASUNCION, Paraguay – An anti-gay tobacco magnate, who compared gay people to "monkeys" and threatened to remove his private parts if his son married another man, was elected president of Paraguay on Sunday.

By electing Horacio Cartes, Paraguayans returned the conservative Colorado Party to the presidency that it held for 61 years, before former Roman Catholic bishop Fernando Lugo won the office in 2008.

Rhode Island Senate panel to consider marriage equality bill this week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Rhode Island state Senate will be considering a marriage equality bill when lawmakers return this week for the final work of their annual session.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider legislation allowing gay couples to wed. The session is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Montana axes obsolete sodomy law

HELENA, Mont. — Sixteen years after the Montana Supreme Court ruled that the state’s sodomy law was unconstitutional, the obsolete law has been deleted from the books.

On Thursday, Gov. Steve Bullock signed Senate Bill 107 in law and formally decriminalized sodomy in Montana.

For the past 24 years, gay activists and their allies have fought to remove the law. When the Governor signed the bill into law, he was greeted with loud applause by dozens of people who gathered to witness the occasion.

Paraguay politician would shoot himself in the balls if his son married a man

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay — Tobacco magnate Horacio Cartes, Paraguay’s leading presidential candidate, has come under fire for comments he made comparing gay people to “monkeys” and threatening to remove his genitals if his son married another man.

In a recent radio interview, Cartes also said support of same-sex marriage is like believing in “the end of the world,” reported The New York Times.

Archbishop of Canterbury conducts historic meeting with gay-rights activist

LONDON – Gay-rights activist Peter Tatchell met today at Lambeth Palace with Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and came away with the impression that leader of the world’s 78 million-strong Anglican Communion is struggling to support equality.

Immigration bill excludes LGBT people

WASHINGTON – The Senate’s so-called Gang of Eight today introduced its new immigration bill, and LGBT binational couples are not mentioned.

LGBT groups and allies said they are hoping that the bill will be amended to include protections for binational couples who are gay and lesbian.
Of the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States, about 267,000 identify as LGBT. Of that total, about 40,000 are binational couples.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – MPs overwhelmingly voted, 77-44, on Wednesday to approve marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples in New Zealand.

The third and final vote was largely ceremonial, since MPs had easily passed the first two readings. The bill now goes to the governor-general for royal assent, which is a mere formality.

Same-sex marriages will begin in August.

Archbishop of Canterbury to meet with human rights activist Peter Tatchell

LONDON – The Archbishop of Canterbury has agreed to meet this week with Peter Tatchell in response to the human rights campaigner’s open letter that was published by SDGLN and other media sources.

Justin Welby, leader of the 78 million-strong worldwide Anglican Communion, will speak with Tatchell at 1:30 pm Thursday, April 18, at Lambeth Palace.
