So why does the latest blueprint for Uptown, a central urban neighborhood that seems to fit the city's mold for growth, call for a big drop in residential density?

Mission Hills Farmers' Market on hiatus

SAN DIEGO -- Partially due to lagging attendance as well as a poor location, organizers of the Mission Hills Farmers' Market have put the weekly market on temporary hiatus, with Wednesday, Dec. 19, being the last day.

Vons Mission Hills receives "Onion" for architecture and design

SAN DIEGO -- At the 2012 Orchids & Onion awards ceremony and silent auction held Thursday, Oct. 11, the season’s annual list of architectural and design winners and losers were announced. Winners, called “Orchids” included the Chicano Park restoration and losers, or “Onions,” included the Miramar College campus.

San Diego Human Dignity Foundation brings together past and present supporters

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation launched a new spring event on Saturday, June 9, reuniting the organization’s past and present founders, donors and board members in order to acknowledge several community recipients of the foundation’s philanthropy. Called the Reunion Party, the event was celebrating the organization’s 16 years of philanthropy and was held at a private residence in Mission Hills.

DINING REVIEW: A door worth knocking on in Mission Hills

When Trish Watlington proclaims her Red Door Restaurant and Wine Bar serves farm-to-table food, she is not talking about purchasing tomatoes and carrots from the local farmers markets. Instead, she nurtures a decent-sized garden at her Mount Helix home, where things like kale, radish, eggplant and lettuce ripen before ending up in the restaurant’s kitchen.

Her newly appointed executive chef, Miguel Valdez, said he could not be happier.

International Restaurant Row forming in Mission Hills

SAN DIEGO -- With the hopes of creating a cohesive identity, the restaurants on the North end of India Street in Mission Hills have begun branding themselves as International Restaurant Row (IRR). Banners and signage are coming soon for the newly minted restaurant district.

Special Delivery San Diego celebrates 21 years

SAN DIEGO -- Serving more than 100 free, healthy meals daily to low-income individuals living with HIV, AIDS and other medical conditions, the nonprofit Special Delivery San Diego can trace its origins back 21 years to the humanitarian effort of one Uptown restaurant owner.

Reconstructed Vons supermarket to open in Mission Hills this week

SAN DIEGO -- Mission Hills and Hillcrest residents will once again have another grocery store to choose from, with the reconstructed Vons supermarket opening later this week.

Under construction for the past 11 months, the new store at 515 W. Washington St. will open at 3 pm Thursday, March 29, following a ribbon- cutting ceremony.

Safeway, the parent company of Vons, has owned and operated a 12,000-square foot store at this location since 1958, but the original store’s size and layout prohibited them from carrying more products and expanding services.

City Council votes to extend Uptown Interim Height Ordinance for two years

SAN DIEGO – Several residents, business owners and concerned citizens headed to the San Diego City Council meeting on Tuesday afternoon to voice their opinions on an agenda item that would extend the Uptown Interim Height Ordinance (IHO), which expired Jan. 23.
