COMMENTARY: The myth of the tolerant Republican

So, the question I was asked is this: “Barb, do you really think I’m a bad person because I’m a Republican?” That question was followed by this: “You know I support gay rights; how can you say I don’t based on the fact that I’m voting for Mitt Romney? I’m not like Michele Bachmann or Rush Limbaugh and don’t you say I am.”

COMMENTARY: Mitt Romney opts for politics over national security

Picture this scenario from last week:

Unrest is fomenting in the Muslim world. Is it due to the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States, the recently notorious and hateful film trailer for “The Innocence of Muslims,” an al Qaeda plot, or the latest storm in the Arab Spring?

I grew up in a small town in Ohio populated by blue-collar, middle-class families. I own this upbringing. So let me share with you what it was like growing up with lots of love and little money.

COMMENTARY: Is it politics or is it prejudice?

This election is one of these moments in time when you have to look yourself in the mirror and ask the reflection you see just what it is you believe in.

You have to ask yourself if you want to keep perpetuating the anger and hate and blame and bigotry and homophobia, or do you want to rise above that and vote for acceptance and tolerance and citizenship.
