House GOP leadership quietly increases cap on DOMA defense to $3 million

WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives’ continuing effort to defend the federal “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA) will soon reach $3 million.

More states call for DOMA to be declared unconstitutional

The state of Vermont on Friday joined New York and Connecticut in asking a federal appeals court to rule that the law defining marriage as between a man and a woman is unconstitutional.

Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell said Friday that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), deprives same-gender couples of federal benefits and unfairly discriminates against them.

The amicus brief was filed in the case of Windsor v. United States, a federal lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and other legal groups.

Barney Frank makes history as first gay congressman to marry

BOSTON — Openly gay U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) on Saturday wed his partner of five years, James Ready, becoming the first sitting member of the U.S. Congress to enter into a same-sex marriage.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) officiated the private ceremony, which was attended by family, invited guests and political luminaries including Nancy Pelosi, top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Niki Tsongas, a Massachusetts Democratic representative.

Frank had told Reuters earlier that he and his husband were not going to allow members of the media.
