ENDA reintroduced in Congress

WASHINGTON -- A bi-partisan group of Senate and House members today introduced the fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would prohibit most employers across the country from discriminating against LGBT workers.

In the Senate, the bill was introduced by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), and Susan Collins (R-Maine).

In the House of Representatives, the bill was introduced by Representatives Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), and joined by more than 100 co-sponsors.

Appeals court temporarily blocks California law banning "ex-gay" therapy

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday temporarily delayed the start date of a new California law that protects LGBT youth from therapists who try to change their sexual orientation despite warnings by medical experts that these discredited practices put youth at risk of serious harm.

The new law was set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2013.

Rights of LGBT Latinos on trial in nation's highest court

WASHINGTON -- The recent announcement that the Supreme Court of the United States will take up two cases involving same-sex marriage is of great significance to LGBT Latinos, as millions of Latinos who identify as LGBT are not afforded the rights and opportunities available through the recognition of their marriages.

California bill gives lesbian couples equal access to fertility services

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California State Senate voted 26-10 on Tuesday to approve a bill that would ensure that women in same-sex relationships and single women can access fertility services on the same terms as women in different-sex relationships.

Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, Lambda Legal staff attorney, said this major policy shift is huge. It, however, doesn't change any laws, but will give undocumented youth who qualify an easier path to citizenship.

Court recognizes new legal claim for unmarried partners intentionally deprived of expected inheritance

SANTA ANA, Calif. — The California Court of Appeal late last week established an important new legal protection for unmarried partners who are wrongfully prevented from inheriting property from each other when one partner dies.

The Court of Appeal ruled in favor of the surviving same-sex partner of a deceased Southern California man in a lawsuit alleging that the deceased partner’s sister had intentionally prevented him from signing a will that would have left a share of his property to the surviving partner.

National Center for Lesbian Rights to celebrate 35 years at gala May 5

SAN FRANCISCO -- The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) is gearing up to celebrate its 35th year, and plans to honor seven heroes in the LGBT movement at a gala celebration on May 5 in San Francisco.

NCLR will honor out actress Jane Lynch, of “Glee” and “Julie & Julia," for using her fame as a platform to further LGBT equality, and for being an outspoken advocate for creating safer, welcoming schools for LGBT children.

COMMENTARY: Ninth Circuit decision keeps focus on California

In a long-awaited decision, a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that stripped the right to marry from same-sex couples in California, is unconstitutional. Judge Stephen R. Reinhardt authored the majority decision, which was joined by Judge Michael Daly Hawkins. The third judge, N. Randy Smith, dissented.

For the last two years, Hurtado has served as the executive director of Equal Rights Advocates (ERA), a San Francisco-based civil rights organization dedicated to advancing equal opportunity for women and girls through impact litigation and advocacy.
