COMMENTARY: The lost souls of the Republican Party

The Republican Party has lost its heart and soul. The party of Abraham Lincoln, founded in the mid-1850s as a political movement united against slavery, has morphed in the 21st century into the party of hate and the party of no.

The party that was primarily comprised of Northerners and rejected by pro-slavery white Southerners is now dominated by white Southerners. The party that was once embraced by freed slaves is now overwhelmingly void of people of color, including African-Americans, Latinos, Asians and immigrants.

COMMENTARY: Wilson, Rove, Gingrich ... and Fletcher

(Editor’s note: The Chair's Corner is a blog by Jess Durfee, chair of the San Diego Democratic Party.)

I've written previously here about the danger posed by Carl DeMaio, a Republican candidate for Mayor whose call to make our San Diego "the Wisconsin of the West" only hints at his extreme right-wing agenda.

COMMENTARY: Remember who signed the NOM Pledge

Bravo to The New York Times editorial board for condemning the National Organization for Marriage and shaming the Republican presidential candidates for not repudiating NOM’s strategy to “Divide and Discriminate.”

GOP presidential candidate Karger: Romney, Santorum, Gingrich should disavow NOM pledge

TOWSON, MARYLAND – In a speech at Towson University last night, Republican Presidential candidate Fred Karger issued a challenge to three of the other four remaining GOP candidates:

“Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich -- you should immediately disavow the National Organization for Marriage’s Pledge that each of you signed. We now have the proof that NOM is an unethical and deceitful operation,” Karger told the class on Presidential Politics.

SDGLN Poll: Readers predict Mitt Romney will be the Republican presidential nominee

SAN DIEGO – A majority of readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll say they believe that Mitt Romney will be the Republican presidential nominee.

Our poll question was: Who do you think will be the Republican presidential nominee? Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul or none of the above.

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 56% of readers say they believe that Mitt Romney will be the GOP nominee, 31% think Newt Gingrich, 3% think Ron Paul, 2% think Rick Santorum and 8% think someone else will be nominated.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Contemplating the hypocrisy of Newt Gingrich

Just having some random thoughts, comparing Newt "The Grinch" Gingrich to Bill "Slick Willy" Clinton:

Bill: Cheated on wife, worked through problems and remained with Hillary; status of happiness level of marriage: unknown

BREAKING NEWS: Rick Perry quits GOP race

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Rick Perry quit his campaign to be the Republican presidential nominee this morning and endorsed Newt Gingrich.

After declaring his run for president on Aug. 13, Perry vaulted to the top of the polls. Vast amounts of campaign donations were sent to Perry, and it looked like he was off and running. He touted his job creation in Texas, though under closer scrutiny the media were able to show that Perry’s claim was overblown.

Perry’s timely was brilliant as his announcement derailed the momentum of Michele Bachmann, who at the time was leading in the polls in Iowa.

COMMENTARY: Anti-gay Evangelicals endorse homophobic Rick Santorum

As so-called moderate Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney builds momentum in his bid to be the GOP nominee, the party’s homophobic wing dominated by anti-gay Evangelicals has rallied behind Rick Santorum.

A roster of known anti-gay hate groups who dominate the Religious Right joined Evangelicals at a ranch in Texas on Friday night, eventually voting to support Santorum over Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry.

COMMENTARY: What did we learn from the New Hampshire primary?

Mitt Romney is on a roll, winning both the Iowa Republican Caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. Still, he has yet to win a majority of the votes in either state, showing that the majority of Republican voters are not quite sold on him as their nominee.

NEWS ANALYSIS: Gay rights supporters won’t let presidential candidates off the hook | VIDEOS

For the first time in American politics, gay rights supporters are putting considerable pressure on all the candidates for President of the United States.

For the past three years, the LGBT community has been quite vocal with President Barack Obama over gay rights issues such as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which was repealed this year. Obama, who is presumed to be the Democratic nominee, has done more for gay rights than any president in history, but some in the LGBT community still want him to evolve further on marriage equality.
