North Park Festival of the Arts returns Saturday

SAN DIEGO -- The community is set to descend on North Park May 18 for the 17th annual North Park Festival of the Arts, featuring art for adults and children, live bands and dance performances, and the return of the Craft Brew Block, with beer and ale from a wide selection of local breweries. The yearly festival is organized by the North Park Main Street, and runs from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

North Park Community Association elects new board members

SAN DIEGO -- The North Park Community Association (NCPA) elected officers and were updated on a number of important neighborhood issues, including battling graffiti, a citizens law enforcement patrol and this year’s Bird Park Summer Concert Series at its annual board meeting, held April 24 at Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Center, 3925 Ohio St.

North Park water tower gets historic designation

SAN DIEGO -- The State Historical Resources Commission approved listing the iconic North Park water tower and all related building to the California Register of Historical Resources in a unanimous decision May 1.

Located at 4326 Idaho St., the water tower and surrounding areas are officially called the University Heights Water Storage and Pumping Station Historic District.

SAN DIEGO -- Water service has been restored to all customers who were affected by a major water main break in North Park.

The west end of Florida Court remains closed to through traffic pending street repairs.

Crews Tuesday are expected to resume work at Florida Court and Georgia Street, where a water main break made a huge mess Monday evening.

Residents worked to save their belongings as a river of water rushed through the streets.

It took about an hour for crews to shut off the water. Neighbors say a few homes were flooded.

TODAY: North Park Community Association to elect new officers

SAN DIEGO -- The North Park Community Association (NPCA) will host its annual meeting and election tonight from 5:30-7:30 pm.

The organization invites all North Park residents to participate in the meeting.

The meeting will also include light food and beverages, time to mingle, the election of new NPCA board members, and interesting community presentations.

NPCA was formed in 1984 to provide a forum for issues and concerns in the community. An all-volunteer organization, the NPCA serves to bring together the diverse residents, property owners and business-people of North Park.

WEDNESDAY: Hillcrest Business Association to take input on neighborhood events

SAN DIEGO -- At its next Member Open House on Wednesday, April 24, the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) will take input from participants on what kind of neighborhood event they want to see in Hillcrest.

In the tradition of South Park's Walkabout, North Park's 30 on 30th, and Little Italy's Kettner Nights, HBA is trying to figure out what its next neighborhood promotional event will be. The organization currently produces popular community events such as CityFest, Hillcrest Hoedown, Taste of Hillcrest, and Taste 'n' Tinis, but hopes to add another regular event to its lineup.

Talmadge residents look forward to revamped village

SAN DIEGO -- Enthusiastic Talmadge residents gathered to brainstorm how they envision their community’s future neighborhood-serving business district. Residents have yearned for decades to create a village core similar to that of Kensington, South Park, and University Heights. This is the first step in making their “village” a reality.

The April 16 “Walk and Shop” research workshop at Franklin Elementary School was led by Jim Bliesner, director of the Center of Urban Economics and Design at UCSD, working with graduate students from Woodbury College of Architecture.

A mid-century childhood in North Park

Having lived in my home in North Park for almost 10 years, sometimes I feel like an old-timer. I find myself more and more telling recent transplants on the block about the people who lived in their house three owners ago, and how different things were way back in the “aughts.”

New sign welcomes travelers to Uptown neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO -- At the northern entrance into University Heights and North Park on Texas Street, a new welcome sign for the two Uptown neighborhoods was revealed Tuesday, March 12, in part to unveil several dedicated pedestrian improvements that help facilitate easier access to and from Mission Valley.

The monument, which reads “Welcome to The Historic Communities of North Park & University Heights,” is situated at the bottom of Texas Street near its intersection with Camino Del Rio South.
