RGOD2: The politics of shame, from San Diego to Dominica

“You should be ashamed of yourselves!” a San Diego mother yelled at me and another clergyman. He happened to be the Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral as we exited our City Council’s public hearing on marriage equality.

Although this event was three years ago, I can still hear her violent words inside my head. Dean Scott Richardson, a straight ally, had just given testimony to the City Council, whose members then voted in favor of marriage equality.

BARTENDER PROFILE: Kevin "Nelly" Gardner of Urban Mo's

Kevin Gardner, known by many as "Nelly," is a popular bartender in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego.

When asked his age, Kevin replied, "Do I have to give you my real age?" -- although we are certain he hasn't even hit 30 yet.

Hailing from Palm Springs, Kevin made it clear he is not from the city's Warm Sands neighborhood, home to many "clothing optional" resorts.

In response to our question about whether or not he is single or taken, he said, "Taken -- yes ... advantage of -- obvie."

It's been 22 years since my first Dinah Shore Weekend production.
