Groundbreaking Nike LGBT Sports Summit takes on bullying, homophobia and transphobia in sports

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Many of the nation’s top LGBT sports leaders joined Nike representatives at Nike World Headquarters for the first-ever Nike LGBT Sports Summit to combat bullying and anti-LGBTQ bias and discrimination in sports.

Advocates and organizations pooled their expertise and strengths over four days — June 14 to June 17 — to develop a unified plan to end harassment and discrimination against LGBT athletes and coaches in kindergarten through high school, college, recreational sports and professional sports.

These two pioneers have been working toward equality for the better part of 30 years.

They’ve visited high schools. They’ve talked to colleges. They’ve waged legal campaigns. They’ve educated educators.

And with more incredible work in 2011, our readers have named these two women our "Persons of the Year."

NCLR applauds new NCAA inclusionary policy regarding transgender athletes

SAN FRANCISCO -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently announced that it has approved and clarified opportunities for transgender student athletes to participate on college athletic teams in accordance with their gender identity.

The NCAA worked closely with NCLR's Sports Project and Griffin Educational Consulting on the policy.

OUTSports.com to begin tracking 100 "moments" in LGBT-sports history

The year 2011 is just barely half over, but it will already go down in the LGBT history books, according to Cyd Zeigler, Jr., cofounder of OUTSports.com.

"If there is a tipping point in the long history of gay sports, 2011 is it," Zeigler wrote in his "Jock Talk Blog" this week, when announcing the list.

It certainly has been a year of firsts, but it is not the only year of firsts -- or memorable moments -- when it comes to LGBT Sports.

Brigham Young University (BYU) recently dismissed star basketball player, Brandon Davies, from the men’s basketball team for violating the school’s honor code. Brandon had sex with his girlfriend. BYU is a Mormon school and the honor code reflects the church’s conservative views on sex and sexuality.

After hearing about this, I thought about what it must be like to be an LGBT athlete at BYU.
