Pentagon extends new protections for gay military families harmed by DOMA

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced today that same-sex spouses of active members of the military will begin receiving protections that were previously denied to them, including the issuance of military identification cards, access to family support initiatives, and joint duty assignments.

The Secretary noted that the Pentagon was doing what it could, within the constraints imposed by the discriminatory so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, said the Pentagon took a step in the right direction.

Smooth transition, unfinished business mark first anniversary of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" repeal

WASHINGTON — Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and OutServe, the association of actively serving LGBT military personnel, on Thursday applauded and celebrated the one-year anniversary of repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” praising the smooth transition the military has made in allowing gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans to serve openly in the military, and called on the White House, Pentagon, and Congress to embrace and advance the final work necessary to achieve full LGBT equality in the Armed Forces.

SAN DIEGO -- The locally based Military Acceptance Project (MAP) will be represented today (June 26) at the Pentagon's first-ever LGBT Pride event.

MAP members said they were startled to get an email invitation to attend the event in Washington, D.C., just days after Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced that the Pentagon would hold such a celebration.

The email, according to MAP officials, acknowledged MAP’s “critical role in making milestones like this possible” and requested official

VIDEO: Six months after repeal, military says DADT died quietly

WASHINGTON — Sgt. Pepe Johnson was surprised by the reaction he received when his fellow soldiers learned that he is gay.

“They’ve pretty much shrugged it off,” said Johnson, who rejoined the Army last fall after nearly a decade away. “Most of them were wondering why I had a nine-year gap in service. When I told them it was because of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ they shrugged it off.

“That was a pleasant surprise.”

Pentagon: Military chaplains can conduct same-sex weddings where permitted

WASHINGTON – The nation’s leading LGBT groups today praised the Pentagon’s decision to allow military chaplains to perform wedding ceremonies where they are legal and if such ceremonies are consistent with their religious traditions.

The Department of Defense today clarified this policy just days after the implementation of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Supporters are calling this an important step to preserving the religious freedom of military chaplains and removing discriminatory barriers for America’s troops.

DADT discharges continue despite repeal that's underway

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has announced that three more servicemembers have been discharged under the military’s outgoing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that discriminates against LGBT troops.

DADT is still in effect until 60 days after the repeal process is officially certified. Outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates predicted recently that certification won’t be done until late July or early August, so LGBT troops should continue to exercise the utmost caution.

The latest DADT discharges did not sit well with advocacy groups.
