Council President Todd Gloria weighs in on Mayor's Balboa Park plan

SAN DIEGO – City Council President Todd Gloria today commented about the Mayor’s proposed changes to the Plaza de Panama area of Balboa Park.

“I have consistently favored the removal of cars from Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama. Because Mayor Filner’s proposal partially accomplishes that vision and because the project would implement a temporary change, I believe I can support the requested $300,000 appropriation during the budget process,” Gloria said.

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: Todd Gloria explains his vote on Balboa Park changes

Friends,

[Monday night], the City Council approved plans to restore pedestrian-only access through the heart of Balboa Park.

There is no place that ignites the passions of San Diegans like Balboa Park, and the plans to remove cars from the park stirred controversy to new levels. I am grateful that our City is home to a place of such importance – historically, civically, and personally. The vote I cast to approve the Plaza de Panama project reflects my respect and appreciation for what is known as the jewel of our City.

In final weeks, opponents float new Balboa Park plan

A plan to remove cars from Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama will face its biggest hurdle in a few weeks. The City Council is due to vote July 9 on the plan, which has sparked fiery discussions and divided community groups and park institutions in the two years since Mayor Jerry Sanders and philanthropist Irwin Jacobs announced it together.

Today, the plaza in front of several central park museums is a complicated mess of cars, roundabout traffic and pedestrians. The city has planned for decades to return it to solely pedestrian use.

ACTION ALERT with VIDEO: Save Balboa Park!

SAN DIEGO -- Balboa Park, our city's crown civic jewel, is close to the heart of San Diego's LGBT community.

As Hillcrest's backyard, Balboa Park hosts one the the largest Pride festivals in the nation. We utilize the resource for a wide variety of sports and outdoor activities.

But one aspect we all enjoy and appreciate is the wonderful park atmosphere created by the historic architecture and landscaping. It is of such significance that El Prado is on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.
