Republicans should back off opposition to same-sex marriage, College Republicans argue in a new report on how to gain the support of young voters.

Using a March survey of young voters, those under 30, by the College Republicans National Committee, the report found that many young voters would not vote for a Republican candidate if they opposed same-sex marriage, even if they agreed with the candidate on a range of other issues.

Former San Diego councilman and mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio Thursday formally announced his candidacy for the 2014 race in the state's 52nd Congressional District.

"I see myself as a 'new generation Republican' who wants to challenge the party to focus on pocket-book, economic and quality of life issues in a more positive and inclusive way, rather than issues that are, frankly, none of the government's business in the first place," DeMaio said in a campaign news release.

SAN DIEGO -- Former San Diego City Councilmember and mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio today announced his candidacy for a local congressional seat. DeMaio seeks to unseat freshman Congressman Scott Peters (D-San Diego) in the 52nd Congressional District in the 2014 race.

A native of Orange County in California, DeMaio served one term on the San Diego City Council from 2008 to 2011 before running for San Diego's mayor last year. Democrat Bob Filner beat Republican DeMaio in a runoff.

DeMaio said he hopes that voters will focus on the important economic issues facing the nation.

Yes, you read that right. In the 2013 off-year elections, a state that once leaned solidly to the center-right has become the newest focal point in the national debate over same-sex relationships. A gubernatorial race already defined partly along culture-war lines has grown even more contentious since last weekend, when Virginia Republicans nominated as their lieutenant governor candidate a firebrand minister who has called gays “very sick people psychologically” and suggested a connection between homosexuality and pedophilia.

Do you believe there will ever be a time in these United States of America when we will not be known as gay-Americans and just simply be Americans?

I ask because I feel that we have become a nation of hyphenated Americans. You know what I’m talking about: gay-Americans, African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Irish-Americans, Jewish-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Muslim-Americans, Japanese-Americans, just to name a few.

Do the hyphens keep us separate from one another? And if that is the case, then we will never be equal because separate but equal is never, ever equal.

A new GOP poll tested former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, an openly gay Republican and potential congressional candidate, as a “new generation Republican” in the highly competitive 52nd District.

DeMaio, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor last year, posted solid favorable ratings. He led freshman Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., in a hypothetical general-election matchup.

The Republican National Committee has again aggressively affirmed its party’s permanent opposition to marriage equality. On Friday the RNC unanimously adopted a resolution declaring that mixed-gender marriage is holy, but same-gender marriage is un-holy. 100 percent of the Republican Congressional leadership – Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-California), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) – and 98 percent of all other Republicans in Congress – oppose marriage equality.
