Dramatic increase in HIV infection rates among gay men, youth

New data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal a sharp increase in the number of new HIV infections among gay and bisexual men and, in particular, among young men ages 13-24.

The new data includes statistics from 2010 and trends from prior years dating back to 2007.

In 2010, the CDC tracked 47,500 new HIV infections across the country. Infection rates among young gay and bisexual men ages 13-24 increased 22 percent over 2008 infection rates.

CHARLOTTE N.C. – The 2012 Democratic Convention proved to be reflective of the country’s “melting pot” moniker in multiple ways. The number of LGBT delegates is historical and record-breaking: 486 in total from every state in the country and a dramatic upswing from the 288 on board for the DNC in ’08.

The young man and straight ally became famous across the nation after standing up at the Iowa General Assembly in support of his two mothers during that state's debate over gay marriage.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Openly gay Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts addressed the last DNC LGBT Caucus on Thursday, and later gave a speech on the convention floor.

Frank, an architect of the new marriage equality plank approved with the platform earlier this week, will step down from his office in January.

The Here Network’s “For And Against” host and political pundit shared an insider’s perspective on the importance of political conventions.

“Even if I was just here as a fly on the wall, it would be a dream to come to a political convention of any party. I wanted to go to the Republican convention, but they weren’t interested in giving out credentials to the host of a liberal television show. Go figure, right?” he said.
