SDGLN Poll: Readers give their opinion on use of the word, "queer"

SAN DIEGO – Readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll are evenly split over whether the LGBT community should “own” the word “queer.”

Our poll question was: The LGBT community increasingly embraces the word "queer." What do you think? Why not just own the word? Why go down that road? Or not sure.

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 46% of readers believe that the LGBT community should own the word, 46% don’t want to go down that road and 9% are not sure.

SAN DIEGO – Readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll think that NBA center Jason Collins will be treated fairly after coming out publicly.

Our poll question was: NBA center Jason Collins comes out. Will he be treated fairly?

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 53% of readers believe that Collins will be fairly treated, 29% are doubtful and 18% are not sure.

Now labeled "a dance for queer women and our allies," this all women's dance is very inclusive.

When We Were Outlaws author to give "Queer Identity" talk downtown Sunday

SAN DIEGO – Jeanne Córdova, author of When We Were Outlaws, will be in San Diego this weekend, giving a lecture of interest to the LGBT community.

Her talk, entitled, "The New Queer Identity," will take place at the San Diego REPertory Theater in the Lyceum space in Horton Plaza on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at 6 pm.

It will precede the play, In the Wake, the latest offering from lesbian playwright Lisa Kron, which starts at 7 pm.
