Seattle LGBT leaders urge Space Needle to fly rainbow flag during Pride

SEATTLE -- Ten LGBTQ organizations have banded together to urge the Space Needle Corp. to fly the rainbow flag annually during the month of Pride and to settle a fair contract soon that includes living wages, continued benefits, job security, and strong anti-discrimination language for sexual orientation and gender identity.

Castro rainbow flag draws controversy in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- Controversy has erupted in San Francisco's LGBTQ Castro District over the management of its historic rainbow flag, igniting tensions throughout the district and questions about how to honor the many faces of the community.

The dispute began after a request to raise the transgender pride flag and fly it at half-mast on November 20, the Transgendered Day of Remembrance, was denied by the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro (MUMC), the stewards of the flag.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The rainbow, which has become the most prominent symbol of the LGBT pride movement, is displayed in all sorts of forms, such as on flags, accessories, stickers, murals and clothing. But one West Hollywood man wants to take it a step further by painting the city's crosswalks in rainbow colors during the 2012 Los Angeles Pride celebration, taking place next weekend.

Martin Duvander, an artist, wrote to the West Hollywood City Council on April 19 with his idea.

BREAKING NEWS: Planning commission rejects Hillcrest Pride Flag project, but City Council to make final decision

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego’s Planning Commission today voted 4-2 to not recommend the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) application to install a 65-foot Pride flagpole at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue, but the project could still obtain the approval of the City Council.

The proposal calls for a rainbow flag to fly year-round on the flagpole, which is in the heart of the gayborhood and near The Center.

Palm Springs Pride picks 2012 theme, sets dates

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The board of directors of Greater Palm Springs Pride has selected "Long May It Wave" as the theme for its annual celebration, to be held in November.

The theme will set the tone for the 26th annual celebration and will be visible on parade floats and in marketing materials promoting Palm Springs as a welcoming and inclusive LGBT destination.

TODAY: SDSU to celebrate LGBT History Month with rainbow flag raising and Big Gay BBQ events

SAN DIEGO -- To celebrate LGBT History Month, San Diego State University (SDSU) will host a series of public events today on the campus.

The day will kick off with a rainbow flag raising ceremony at noon on Campanile Walkway near the school's Hepner Hall.

A replica of the original eight-color rainbow flag, owned by SDSU administrator Doug Case, will fly over the campus for the remainder of the day. Case's flag was autographed by Gilbert Baker who designed the rainbow flag in 1978.

TODAY: San Diego LGBT Pride week to kick off with rainbow flag raising ceremony at SDSU

SAN DIEGO -- In advance of this weekend's festivities, San Diego LGBT Pride will kick off its 37th annual celebration today with a rainbow flag raising ceremony at San Diego State University (SDSU).

The event will begin at 11 am on the campus and the entire community is welcome to the short program, which will include the flag raising.

As web flourishes, gay groups see enrollments dwindling

SAN FRANCISCO -- The lobby of San Francisco’s stylish Parc 55 Hotel was packed with bears. Not beasts from the forest, but large, hirsute gay men in jeans and hoodies.

The men gathered for the International Bear Rendezvous last month, lounging on red Barcelona chairs and hugging near the elevators. Over the last 17 years, the event has attracted thousands of grizzly men and their admirers from around the world.

But this year’s festivities marked a bittersweet finale — the bear event is now extinct.
