RGOD2: “God Loves Uganda” exposes Christian Right’s dirty work in Africa

In September 2011, I was invited by a young filmmaker, Roger Ross Williams, to be part of a panel at “Good Pitch” in San Francisco to support his undercover and highly controversial film about religious fundamentalism’s obsession with homosexuality in Uganda.

Working Films is an organization that brings together emerging filmmakers with NGOs, philanthropists and foundations to support emerging really good filmmaking.

RGOD2: The sex tourism industry of American Evangelicals in the age of AIDS | VIDEOS

Many of us who survived the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the USA will reflect on how difficult it was to walk through the cloud of stigma and discrimination as we reflect on World AIDS Day this weekend.

We lost many brave friends who taught us how to love fearlessly and safely. Straight allies and health care professionals began to understand LGBT more than before and that our love was good. How we cared for our partners and friends and created organizations that were open to everyone is an enduring tribute to the indomitable spirit of that difficult chapter of our lives.

COMMENTARY: 5 reasons why the Christian Right is warning of a "revolution"

Days before the election Pastor Robert Jeffress of the 10,000-member First Baptist Church of Dallas compared President Obama to Hitler, telling 600 other pastors at a luncheon that if they didn't speak out on the election, it could lead to another Holocaust.

Christian Right failed to sway voters on issues

Christian conservatives, for more than two decades a pivotal force in American politics, are grappling with Election Day results that repudiated their influence and suggested that the cultural tide — especially on gay issues — has shifted against them.

They are reeling not only from the loss of the presidency, but from what many of them see as a rejection of their agenda. They lost fights against same-sex marriage in all four states where it was on the ballot, and saw anti-abortion-rights Senate candidates defeated and two states vote to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

COMMENTARY: A new America, a madrassa education

Over 2 million American children are currently homeschooled, the majority of them for religious reasons. Hundreds of Christian colleges and universities prepare tomorrow’s Bible-based policy-makers to serve in the name of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

RGOD2: The spiritual journey begins in exile

(Editor's note: SDGLN is protecting the identity of Peter, which is not his real name. He says he is concerned about his family and colleagues in Ethiopia, and his future fighting for LGBT human rights in his native land.)

Peter speaks very quietly and it is sometimes difficult to understand his English. It is hard to believe that Ethiopian authorities see this 27-year-old man as a threat to their national security, but he is the leading gay activist in this largely Christian society.

COMMENTARY: The myth of the tolerant Republican

So, the question I was asked is this: “Barb, do you really think I’m a bad person because I’m a Republican?” That question was followed by this: “You know I support gay rights; how can you say I don’t based on the fact that I’m voting for Mitt Romney? I’m not like Michele Bachmann or Rush Limbaugh and don’t you say I am.”

A burning question: Is heterosexuality illegal in California?

The headline is sensational and does what headlines are supposed to do – it grabs your attention:

“California Bans Heterosexuality.”

After my initial shock, I settled down and read the story under the headline and quickly learned, to my great relief, that the Golden State hasn’t really banned heterosexuality – at least not yet.

California hate group leader is behind "film" that has inflamed Muslims

Steve Klein, the leader of a California hate group, says that Islam is a “penis-driven religion” whose followers have “no choice but to hunt Jews and Christians down, torture us and murder us.”

RGOD2: President Clinton recognizes LGBT global rights and faith leaders

Being originally from Northern Ireland, there is a special place in my heart for Bill Clinton. His particular interest in the sectarian conflict in Ireland changed history. During his Presidency, he had many close advisors who worked tirelessly to end the religiously based conflict that scarred all of us from that troubled little island.
