Broad coalition launches website, toolkit to support Respect for Marriage Act

WASHINGTON – The Respect for Marriage Coalition, comprising 75 diverse organizations dedicated to passing the Respect for Marriage Act, today launched a website, toolkit and materials that will spur grassroots efforts to urge Congress to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage.

The Respect for Marriage Act (H.R.1116 and S.598) would repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which withholds critical federal protections and respect from legally married same-sex couples.

Campaign to mark Memorial Day with petition to end marriage discrimination against military families

WASHINGTON – As Memorial Day approaches, Freedom to Marry and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) launched a grassroots petition calling on Congress to end marriage discrimination against service members and veterans.

The petition builds support for repealing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and passing the Respect for Marriage Act, and is part of the new Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry national campaign highlighting the stories of military families harmed by DOMA.

A year later, proposed DOMA repeal bill keeps gaining new co-sponsors

WASHINGTON – Reps. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Hansen Clarke (D-MI) and Steve Cohen (D-TN) became the latest members of Congress to join the growing number of supporters of the Respect for Marriage Act (HR 1116 and S 598), the bill that would repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Representing diverse regions of the country, they signed on just days before the one-year anniversary of the Respect for Marriage Act’s introduction, bringing the total number of cosponsors in the House and Senate respectively to 140 and 31, up from 108 and 18 on March 16, 2011.

WASHINGTON – A robust coalition made up of civil rights, labor, progressive, faith, student, health, legal, women’s and LGBT organizations today announced support of the Respect for Marriage Act – the bill to repeal the discriminatory so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that withholds federal protections and respect for legally married gay and lesbian couples.

The Respect for Marriage Act (H.R.1116 and S.598) enjoys broad support with a majority of Americans and has a record number of Congressional cosponsors with 136 in the House and 32 in the Senate.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen signs on as first GOP sponsor of Respect for Marriage Act

WASHINGTON – Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) on Friday became the first Republican member of Congress to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act.

The Florida congresswoman is a longtime ally of the LGBT community.

“I’m pleased to join the Log Cabin Republicans in our fight for marriage equality. I co-sponsored the repeal of DOMA because I firmly believe that equality is enshrined in our Constitution and in our great democracy,” Ros-Lehtinen said.

Log Cabin Republicans thanked Ros-Lehtinen for her support.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has come out in support of the Respect for Marriage Act, proposed in the Senate.

Press Secretary Jay Carney said today during a White House news conference that the President has thrown his support to the bill, which will be the subject of a historic hearing on Wednesday morning in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, will be among those who will be testifying in favor of the bill.
